I found the online store "egg whites international" is that where most of you get your whites from? Is there somewhere "better"/cheaper?

What do you do with the yolks? Do you have one of those egg separater spatula thingies to separate them? Or do you just move the yolk back and forth between the shells?

No egg separator thingy. I just crack them, and then separate the yolk to one part of the shell and dump the white into a bowl or the skillet. The poor yokes go down the drain unless one is included in my meal.
It used to bother me to throw out the yolks, but i'd rather separate my own eggs than buy them that way in a container.

Just buy eggs at the supermarket and seperate them and throw the yolk down the drain :)
I buy them at Costco. I did the math and they're much less expensive than buying the eggs and separating them. I was surprised.

I get eggs at the supermarket, separate them by hand and give the yolks to my doggies. Egg yolks are excellent for them :)

i used to by ALL egg whites at the supermarket - but real egg whites taste so much better- consistency is thicker . So just buy eggs from now on again and just separate them.. I did buy little eggwhites container to bring with me on the trip - more convenient - but taste is not the same :sad:
Oh and I buy my whole eggs at costco - 4 huge boxes at a time :shhh:. yolks go down the drain.. egg wites cartons at supermarket are more expensive than buying real eggs at costco

How did you do your math? The eggs international sell 4gallons for $132 (after shipping). That's $33/gal. 1gal = 256T, 1 egg white (from one reg egg) = 2T. So there's 128 egg whites/gal. Making each egg white about 26cents. This is over $3 for one dozen!!

At my supermarket (read:Walmart) the egg whites are retardedly expensive. I think like $3 for a little pint or something :yucky:

I bought them so long ago, I don't have the bill. I think I bought like $40 worth, and I have them in the deep freeze. I haven't had to buy any whites since the summer. :clap:

How much did $40 buy you? I don't live in CA, so if you didn't get it online, I couldnt buy them from the same place anyway :(

I'll try to remember...it was months ago. I think I got 13 pkgs of 3 cartons. I think it might have been more now...maybe closer to $60? The week before, the whites they had were $0.11/white, but when I went back they were $.10, so I bought a shitload. They freeze wonderfully!

I used to just buy whole eggs and separate the white and the yolk, throwing the yolks away. Makes for some very stinky garbage! When I'd have time I'd fry them for the dog, but that is rare. I don't dare put them down the drain, I think that would do bad things to the septic tank. I also ended up with egg white all over my fingers, or breaking a yolk. So now that I have finally found a grocery store where I can buy the whites in a carton, that's what I do.

THey sell them in the grocery down here as well. Never tho of them as a specialty item, wow.
I think the "real" eggs also taste better too. Prolly the most important reason for using real, whole ones.

The only person I "know" that gets their egg whites online is Jen (atherjen). I get mine from the supermarket (whole eggs) and separate them myself. I prefer the taste.
I got a VERY good deal from Egg Whites International while at the Europa Supershow this late summer. ended up with 8 gallons of egg whites :laugh: (there was a misunderstanding how many I wanted) The gallons freeze until use & are pasturized. Will has had no problem eating them, whereas regular eggs cause him problems.
I still buy a dozen whole eggs from grocery store for when needed to throw in a yolk.

I buy mine at trader joe's, I think they're $2 per pint. I spend enough time making my food that I don't want to have to separate eggs too and pour them into a measuring container to measure the whites (and real egg whites don't separate easily into 1/4 cup etc.) (and if you don't have a dog/pig or insinkerator, putting them in the garbage is a real PITA).
Real egg whites do have a better texture though (b/c not pasteurized).

But dietary cholesterol really isn't related to lipid cholesterol. Half the protein and a lot of the nutrients are in the yolk.

egg yolks ARE very nutritious! but I buy the egg whites since I eat more whites vs. egg yolks. i.e 1 whole egg + several egg whites.

I buy the multi pack of egg beaters from Costco (store brand actually) and the big crate of 15 dozen whole eggs. Between me and 4 other family members, the 15 dozen usually lasts us about 6 weeks or so. I use the egg beaters for cooking and when I'm feeling guilty about throwing away yolks.

I buy my eggs from a farmer. The chickens are fed organic feed etc. I eat so many, I figure I should splurge on the eggs.

Just be careful. I'm a veterinary technician, and while dogs in the wild rarely cook their food, they also don't live as long. Raw eggs can still cause salmonella problems in dogs, same as people.

Ok, I have a question: How long do egg whites keep for (uncooked)?
I'm thinking of buying some eggs and seperating the whites from the yolks in advance so when I cook the stuff in the morning, I only have to measure it out instead of worrying about it all when I have next to no time (plus I'm not very coordinated in the morning). I'd be putting them in a tupperware container in the fridge. Would I be ok for the week?

Agree. I am paranoid about that stuff, though.
I just started using Egg Beaters regularly and I am totally hooked. So much nicer to just be able to pour it into the pan instead of separating the eggs, etc. (Yes, I am lazy :oops:)

True. But the bonus is the egg whites can be frozen - my deep freeze is full of them, I haven't bought any in over 4 months!

I buy those egg white in container, but I never try to put them in the freezer . Someone told me that they turn into water texture when unfrozen and it take more time to cook them. It's true?

"Eggs are perishable and quickly lose their prime quality unless kept in a cool place, preferrably the refrigerator. Never place them uncovered in the refrigerator as they absorb surrounding odors very easily and lose moisture. Keep them in their container, which is designed for their best storage. Store them with narrow end down to keep the egg yolk centered (for use in boiling and frying).
Leftover egg yolks should be stored in a clean glass jar. Pour a thin layer of cold water over the eggs in the jar and cover. Leftover egg whites should also be covered and stored in a clean glass jar. Do not keep separatd unshelled parts for more than 2-3 days." (in the refrigerator)
If I remember correctly, FREEZING the whites, they can last up to 8 months.

1 TBSP liquid egg sub yields 2g protein.
Being that an egg has 6g protein, I'd say on average the liquid subs measure 3 TBSP for the equivalent of one egg.

I think my carton says 1/4c = 2 whites.
I use 1/2c and one full egg.

According to that average egg sub nutr facts I used...
1/2c = 2.5 eggs (15g Pro)
Again, just an average number, not based brand per brand. But at least it's a roundabout number for you :)

Yeah, the few times I've used the cartons of whites, I get all confused on how much is equal to an egg. That's why I've tended to stick with just separating the whole eggs myself.
But at least that gives you an idea, and if you go to that link i posted earlier, it's got all kinds of stuff about the subs other than just the nutr facts labels.
