Does anyone know if it is "OK" to eat tuna while BFing? I read stuff on limit it to 6oz per week while prego, but what about while BFing? Same rules apply:confused:

I'm pretty sure the limit is the same because mercury(found in tuna, swordfish, shark etc) can be excreted in breastmilk. It's probobly safe to eat occasionally, but I wouldn't make it your main source of protein.

Yeah, I agree w/homeschoolmom. I'm nursing a 4 weekold, and I limit tuna to a can a week, if that, and maybe one serving of salmon a week. However, now's the time to up your fish oil supplementation a bit...since breastmilk is high in DHA, you want to make sure you get enough EPA/DHA for both you and the baby. Choose a brand of fish oil that has a reputation for purity, as you want to avoid the mercury issue there, too.

I get my fish oil from www.pgfo.com Pharmaceutical grade, so I can take a higher dose without the worry of contaminants/mercury.

I've been eating tuna maybe once a week or less, but I eat catfish and tilapia a couple times a week. I recently started taking fish oil (again). I was reading about the benefits of taking fish oil when breastfeeding a couple of days ago. Breastmilk has DHA in it, but taking fish oil just adds more and that's great for brain development. I was even considering getting some kid's fish oil to give my DD.

First, congrats on the little one!!

I just take the Omega 3 that comes with my prenatals. There's two pills, one is a multi (folic acid, complex Bs, et al) and the other Omega 3. Does that mean it's fish oil? That's all I'm taking and seems to be enough...I think.
