I think what I do is very close to HIIT but not quite. It's just so friggin hard (I'm a wuss...sue me).

I do intervals. They are in the nature of 1:3 or 1:2. some intervals during the 30 minutes are walk fast 30 seconds...run 30 seconds (I may do 3-4 of these)...sometimes it's walk fast 1 minute and jog 1.5-2 minutes (I may do 2 rounds of these and then go back to the walk fast 30 seconds ...run 30 seconds...although I do note by then the walk fast is 45 seconds...run is 30 seconds and I might do 3 rounds of that and then start all over until my 30 minutes are up. After say 3 minutes of warming up and building the speed up, my average HR is at about 80% of my max HR for the 30 minutes I do this cardio. I'm 51 and my resting HR is 52 and I try to average about 145+ bpm. For me this is very tough. The runs are not "full out" as I feel like I need to try to preserve SOME energy to make it through the full 30 minutes. My runs, for me though, are quite tough especially as the sessions progress. It seems as time passes the walks are slowly getting longer...I try to keep them short i.e. 1:1 or 1:2 it all depends on how I "feel" with my HR.

My goal is fat loss and to optimize that (the food diet is 95% clean...it may be even 100% clean...I just like to leave some room for the possibilty that something unclean may slip in). Would I be better off to do say 15-20 minutes of true HIIT...i.e. 1:3 run/walk fast...and see what my HR averages that way? I mean I'm averaging 80-85% of my max HR for 30 minutes that's got to be valuable for my goal, right? It's hard to conceive that 20 minutes of true HIIT would be better....I know I end up debating this stuff...but I won't....if you say 20 minutes of true HIIT would be better for me...I will try it.

I think you should do both......

Heart rate is pretty irrelevant with HIIT. Just sprint as hard as you can during your sprinting interval (you shouldn't be able to last more than 20/30 sec. - or whatever your sprinting time is - if done correctly).

And HIIT is different than interval training (which is more like what you are doing now). Is HIIT better? It depends on your goals but it is one more tool to can be used on your fat loss quest.

I think intervals are fun- so I would do both. I do love cardio though so that is just me!
