View Full Version : What body fat % do you maintain girls?
JulieT

I have endometriosis, and I'm working to reduce my body fat to about 15%. I do no supplements other than protein shakes, and I work out just for health. For those of you who remain this low (or lower), are you able to sustain it year round? Do you have to always eat clean to maintain it?
Last week, I was up around 155 lbs and hurting like crazy. I started eating clean on Thursday, and I'm down to 149 / 20% fat. If I can reduce my % fat, in theory my estrogen levels will drop and put me into remission. But if I can't maintain it with the occasional slice of pizza or cookie, it probably isn't a feasible long term goal for me. Sure, I can eat clean for as long as it takes to get the fat off, but I'm scared of having to eat that way forever to maintain it. I guess the question is, how "off" can you go from your totally clean diet? At some point, will my body adjust and just "stick" there if I have a craving for Long John Silver's chicken planks? (Eeeew - greasy and crunchy. Now I'm hungry.)

15% is a pretty low number to maintain in the long run, no? Seems like it might be a little low, but I have never been that lean, so I don't really know for sure.
I think I'm around 18% or so? Just a conservative estimate. I don't know for sure. I only have my Tanita scale to go on, which I know isn't remotely accurate.

I'm really not sure where I am at..ever.
At 149 and 20% fat you must have a lot of muscle. If not, 20% seems a little low for 149lbs IMO.
If you get to 15% an 'occasional' slice of pizza or Long John Silver's is not going to hurt you.
I eat 'clean' most of the time, though.

I really think it's individual and depends where your set point is. Some people have to work really hard to get to a lower body fat % and have to work hard to stay there, whereas some people naturally have a lower body fat % and can afford a few dietary slip ups here and there.
You don't have to have a 100% clean diet to lose fat.
The only thing I can recommend is to try it.

I don't know about specific body fat percentages, but I think it's doable to say fairly lean year round....it just depends what your goals are. If your sole goal is just to stay reasonably lean and have some treats...sure. Just have the treats as your cheat. You can't eat that way every day, though.
Now, when you start throwing out %'s...forget it...I don't want to get into that argument.

I've seen that pic many many times. My comment was more directed at.... what does the rest of her body look like i.e her lower body.
People seem to be taking this picture as a benchmark of what their abs need to look like at 14% I know I, for one... would NEVER look like that in the abdominal area at 14% simply because my fat distribution is not like the "typical" woman.
Not to take any glory away from this chick's hard work.... just sayin'
What we really need is a range of pictures of different women at 14% instead of people posting up that picture all the time. It really is misleading.

It would represent an average of her entire body is my understanding of that figure. So she might have an 8% upper body and say a 22% lower body for example. I think that's how it was explained to me. I used to think the 14% figure represented everything.
Regional fat distribution and the like.
I think the point in the picture being frequently used, is that people often are not as lean as they think they are - men and women. I've seen some preposterous claims.

Right...and to give an accurate picture of the AVERAGE the whole picture should be displayed  How is it accurate to say she's tested at 14% and only show the 8% upper body portion.

Actually, this pic is not the one people post most of the time. That one doesn't show her legs at all.
But I agree with what you have to say about not every woman having abs that cut at 14%. I don't think mine would be, because I'm not like the typical woman either. However, my legs are lean enough to show the beginnings of vascularity. And my upper body shows vascularity as well.

Right. Built's picture can be misleading when only the top half is shown and then calling it 14%. And for those that don't know...her picture and stats are used because of 1. The fantabulous abs and upper bod and 2. She had a DEXA at that point to substantiate the bodyfat percentage. DEXA is a scan that they use for testing bone density most of the time, but can also be used to fairly accurately measure body composition (muscle, fat, bone, etc.)

We should get you DEXA'd for the May show. That'd be very, very interesting. But also in the grand scheme of things ... it doesn't really matter. Ripped is ripped.

I tried once. Not before my show, but a little before. My doctor's office said it didn't measure body comp...just bone. I watched her do everything, too. Maybe a different type of machine there or something. I could try to find a place that does it, though. Cindy had hers done.

Eat clean and possibly organic. There are a lot of "estrogenic" substances in the chemicals used to preserve food and vegetables. Especially meat. Hormone free has helped me. Believe it or not some soaps, detergents and perfumes also have "estrogenic" properties.

Ok, Built looks amazing. But what I'm more floored by is that she eats a little over 2000 calories! And her training doesn't look insanely different from anyone else here. Maybe I misread, but damn, that's amazing if all of that is correct.

Ok, so here is my r-tard question for the day. How do you know if your maintenance is higher than the calculate 14-16 x bw? Do you keep increasing 100 calories every week until the scale budges upward? I ask because I'm still learning about going to maintenance (slowly moving there) and trying to make sense of it all.

Why are you so surprised someone can cut on 2000 cals? The whole process is entirely individual. Any formulas are to be used as starting points only. Same goes for maintenance and bulking.

Remember it depends how tall and how much lean body mass you have, too...as to how many calories you can afford. So, if you are much smaller, your maintenance/cutting calories will be lower.

Well, she still expends energy lifting.
And at the same time, eat more and lose slower is always an option as well. Could be a better approach for muscle maintenance if you're patient enough.
However, perhaps the strategy still needs some tweaking to get the lower body to respond. Ie, lower calories, more cardio, etc.

From what I read, her approach is very conservative. Half pound per week. Even looking at her photos, March 2004 to November 2005, long time, but big difference.

Ya, I get it, now.
From what I understand, Built's approach is all about getting as lean as she can with the least amount of uncomfortableness (from dieting and cardio) as possible.
The thing is, by her own admission, she hasn't gotten her lower body as lean as she'd like to.

It doesn't matter what your body fat % REALLY is...well, it is a curious thing, though....but my point is that you can use your tools (calipers, scales, whatever) to judge if you are making progress. The only reason I got DEXAd was to know what my bodyfat distribution was, and to know once and for all how much LBM a trained, unassisted middle-aged woman could gain on a bulk.
Having established both, I'd have to agree with Erik - you either look good naked, or you don't.

Mother of Four, a Bodybuilder?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes, it is true...I have four children! I am a professional bodybuilder in the NGA, and yes...it wa tough! However, I am happy as can be about the level of fitness that I have achieved. My kids are my inspiration (they love to flex their biceps for me):-)
I have been doing personalized programs for training and nutrition for many years, and have had great success for myself and for many others. Below is a typical off season weekly training scheme for me:
When I am not getting ready for a competition, I go into my OFF SEASON, where I focus on building and sculpting my muscles. My nutrition does not change much in quality, but it does change in quantity. I eat a higher calorie count, as for normal living I am more comfortable at a body fat higher than that of a competition level (10-11% rather than 6-7%). Unlike contest prep, off seasons at least for me include a little cheat here and there. I have a big family, and this is impossible to avoid! I am just careful to include it in my daily calorie count.
I do some modeling in my off season, so there are actually time where I will revert to a stricter calorie count in order to trim down for pictures, maybe for a two week time frame here and there. It is good to vary nutrition just as it is your training, and a period like this might last about two weeks or so. Then I go back up in calories again.
Here are some general guidelines I follow for off season nutrition:
1) At least 160-185 grams of protein each day
2) Roughly 2000 calories on my weight training days
(which you will read later lack no hardcore qualities
3) About 1600-1800 calories on cardio/cross training days
4) I eat lots of carbs around my workouts - no ifs and or butts about it!
5) I supplement with vitamins and a BCAA/Creatine water drink during and after my workouts
For me, keeping my fat intake somewhere around 20% and NO MORE than 30% seems to work well for me. Any more than that and my body may start to store some unnecessary fat. To see an example menu for my off season, you can go to my website at www.jenheath.com
For training, there are two schemes that I alternate between. The first involves a split and looks something like this:
M: Heavy chest and back, light biceps, triceps and deltoids
T: Cardio - Low intensity intervals or cross training only. I try to avoid high intensity Cardio in my off season. It is more for fat loss rather than maintenance. However, fot those trying to burn fat, HIT is a GREAT idea!!!
W: Quads, hamstrings/glutes, Calves with a possible widowmaker (set of 20) set of squats
TH: Cardio or crosstrainer
F: Heavy shoulders, biceps and trisceps, light chest and back
S: Light legs (as a recovery workout) and/or cardio
I use this scheme to properly stimulate my nervous system to maximize recovery and growth. It works incredibly well. As I progress from week to week on this scheme, I will increase my sets and decrease reps. By keeping volume up but varying load, you can continue to get growth more effectively for a longer time frame.
I firmly believe that switching your workout too often will minimize potential gains from any training time frame. This scheme allows for maximum gains.
The other scheme I use is one that only a certain type of genetic/metabolism can handle without overreaching/overtraining.
I am a FULL BODY WORKOUT LOVER. I enjoy a specialized three full body workouts per week scheme. They vary in intensity. Let me describe...
M: POWER/STRENGTH DAY
Heavy weights, low reps, basic movements
Week 1 and 2: 3 sets, 5-6 reps
Week 3 and 4: 4 sets, 4-5 reps
Week 5 and 6: 5 sets, 3-4 reps
W: PUMP-DENSITY/REST PAUSE DAY
5 sets, 5-12 reps with 20 seconds in between sets, going down in weight if I can't pump out 5 reps at any given set
F: TRADITIONAL BB WORKOUT
Week 1 and 2: 2-3 sets, 10-12 reps
Week 3 and 4: 3 sets, 8-10 reps
Week 5 and 6: 4 sets, 6-8 reps
Plus, 1 intensity technique set on the last set i.e. partials, flushing, drop set etc..I do not like to use intensity techniques a whole lot, because they mostly just make you more susceptible to injury, but when not over utilized, used in moderation, (i.e.when you have two days to rest) they can be very effective.
I do this workout one of three ways:
1- Standard straight sets
2 - Different exercises for each muscle each and every set
3- Supersetting appropriate muscle groups
This full body workout scheme works well for someone whose nervous system can stand that kind of stimulation and who is willing to eat the calories/macros necessary to build muscle mass! The various intensities and muscle fibers that are hit my training this way can seriously instigate enormous growth. Conversely it can throw one into a state of overtraining in a fast hurry if they are not genetically suited to handle it, do not rest or eat sufficient calories.
I have very specific details about my full body workouts here:
http://www.jenheath.com/tntradfbexamples.html
which most of you women would LOVE!
One other thing, even I do not repeat the full body workouts for more than one cycle. Switching back to plan 1 not only allows a break from such frequent training of the muscles, but the immense response I will get by going back to my split makes it all worthwhile!

For reference, age 38, I was 170 lbs and reverse engineering from where I am now, close to 40% bodyfat.
I went from a size 14 on the bottom to a size 2.
Fantastic.

"Head" is part of it too:17.5% bodyfat
So what % would make one a fathead? :funny:

Thanks Smuggie.
I'm interested to see what happens to my legs this cut - I've been doing very different quad work since my back injury - hopefully it'll pay off.
And I'm hoping to be a fathead now. Fatty brains and all. ;)
Thanks Smuggie.

But that trains the muscles underneath the fat ...

Exactly. I'm one of those rare hamstring-dominant types. No shape through the quads. I'm hoping to change that.

My question though is ... how does that affect your ability to get your lower body lean?

It won't.
What I'm hoping is that my legs will at least have a more aesthetic shape.
And maybe if I can get a little more muscle there, they'll at least show that shape at higher bodyfat.

Holy crap. I had an interview, so I was off line studying for it last night and out this morning. 21 pages of responses?
Anyway, I'm 5'8". 20% is avg for body fat from the caliper measurement I had done at the YMCA (I have no idea how accurate that is). I'm a size 6 in clothing, and I've always been dense (as in heavier than I look). I lift 3x per week and run ~ 5 miles/day when I'm not lifting.
Thanks for the responses - or at least for the ones who actually responded to my question. I live in the fattest city on the planet, so finding anyone around here for guidance/support is almost impossible. Obviously, if I eat like crap all the time, it won't happen. I'm trying to avoid surgery by suppressing my estrogen through lower body fat. My drs have offered up Lupron as an alternative, but I have no interest in putting that in my body.
More than anything, I just wondered what on average is maintainable for you. I figure most people on this board are a lot more dedicated than I am - especially those of you who compete. And if you tell me you the best you can maintain long-term is 17-20%, than I can at least set myself a realistic goal and start looking for a surgeon. However, if everyone is maintaining at 10%, maybe I have a shot. Thanks!
Built - Wow! I'm blown away by your numbers. That is awesome!

I hope you can stay off the meds too.
As you cant tell, most of us dont pay mind to body fat. (EDIT:) percentages We cant tell you what we maintain at other than a mirror image of satisfaction.
You have to maintain where your happy, not at someone else percieved level.

Julie - thanks! I'm not quite where I'd be if I could wave my magic wand, but I'm SO MUCH BETTER than I was ... and I changed my destiny. It's a huge relief to be in control of my weight, up OR down.

Julie, I think our point is that what you think is 17-20%, may not actually be 17-20%. I don't know what bodyfat % I am, but I can maintain a fairly lean look.

In control is a good feeling.
according to calipers i am 11%, according to those automatic weight scales I am 28% on a good day drinking lots of water, handheld testers I am like 9 when my hands are cold.
pinch me, its water, not fat
Built- cool to have you here:) I didnt know meaurments could be split in % for each bodypart! where did you have that done?
Ya, those freaking scales always put me like double my caliper measurements. :pimpslap: to scale.

Really? You mean the tanita scales for example? OH good, maybe mine is really over-off too.
Do the girls using calipers as their method of assessment use the male or female predictive equations?
11% on a girl is 6% on a guy assuming identical skinfold readings over 7 sites. 9% - closer to 4%.

I wanted to be DEXad' next year rigth before comp for interest and giggles.
Ill start a bet as a fundraiser "whats my bodyfat %" hehe

That would mean you're on par with a 6% male. I'm going to have to say that's a bit on the low side.

I dont think Im THAT low though. that was taken 6 weeks ago last set of pics (see sig, page 2). at 146lbs.
I have great disbelief in what calipers have ever told me
