I know that the muscles are already hit more efficiently through squats, deadlifts, etc. But are there specific problems with the biomechanics of these machines that I can share with people? I seem to remember Erik mentioning an overloading of the piriformis muscle at one time.

Those machines don't even train the muscles they're supposed to. One, they overtrain piriformis and two there's far too much hip flexion in that machine and the TFL takes over for the glute medius. Inhibit one of them by locking yourself in one plane of motion you'll wind up with flawed substitution patterns.

Good to know.

if hip flexion is a problem, what about lowering the seat so that you're not sitting up as much? how does that change the muscles worked?

How does that change anything?

well doesn't that take the "too much hip flexion" issue out of it?

you could do the exercise standing with cables or tubing if you are interested in working the muscles you intend to.

....or you could just squat or do lunges, etc.. :ninja:

 huh?! I don't know what flawed substitution patterns are but its doesn't sound good, I'll avoid these
