View Full Version : Lat Pulldowns & Chin Ups

Theoretically, would I be able to finally do a chin-up when I can do a lat pulldown = to my bodyweight? If I lost 10lbs. of bodyweight, that would mean I still need to increase my lat pulldown by 60 lbs!!!

I don't think so. I don't know how much I do on my lat pulldowns because I have no idea how much the plates weigh on our machine, but I'm pretty sure it's not my bodyweight... and I can do three chin ups (four on a good day).

No.

Why not? That is the logic I use too and obviously it's flawed but can you explain why not?

They're mechanically different exercises.

Not getting into the whole open-chain vs. closed-chain thing, but suffice it to say, it makes enough of a difference that they aren't the same.

I still use pulldowns for hypertrophy purposes because tension on the muscle is tension on the muscle. But they won't do much for pullup performance.

I pulldown my body weight but still have difficulty in pullups.

Chin-ups I can do.

Am I the only one in the world who finds pullups easier than chinups?

That's odd, since the biceps are in a more mechanically advantageous position in the chin up position.

So the diagnosis is: I am odd.

FWIW, I don't find much difference in strength between the grip positions.

Didn't we make this diagnosis a couple months ago? ;)

Same with me. I've never really tested my 1 rep max on the lat pulldown, but I only do about 90 lbs. for 5-6 reps.

I can now (finally!) do 3 wide grip pull-ups and 6 chin ups.

Someone out there must have been reading my mind, because I was going to post a thread about which would be "easier" (and I use that term loosely) to attempt unassisted....chin-ups or wide grip pull-ups.

Obviously it's an individual thing, but I'm gathering chin-ups might be a better bet to work towards?! (Besides the fact that they just look bad ass when done unassisted!) :flex:

Am I the only one who does not know the differance between a pull up vs a chin up?

Can someone explain the defferance.

Thanks Thunder.

And here I was thinking I was able to do pullups.

So what else can be done to help build up to a chin up or pull up? I don't think my new gym has the assisted pullup machine, though I didn't search for one today; I just did lat pull downs. I guess I could always just hang from a chin up bar and hope in vain that the bar will suck me up towards it magically . . .

Accentuated eccentric pull-ups:

Basically you perform only the eccentric (lowering) portion of the pull-up, but do so as slowly as possible and go up either with the help of a partner or by resetting on each rep. Once you can get 5 pull-ups/chins by yourself you can resume a regular program performing sets of 4-5 pull-ups with 5-6 assisted ones, until you can get up to 10.

I can do weighted pullups but can't do my bodyweight in lat pulls for the same # of reps as I can w/ weighted pullups

lol

I can't do 1. :(

I was always the fat kid growing up who was humiliated during PE physical testing every spring b/c I couldn't even pull myself up 1/4 of the way.

Leaner and stronger, and I still can't. Humiliating. :ban:

Oh, oh, I think I've been doing them incorrectly then. I thought that there is also a difference in how wide your grip is. As in chin-ups is a narrow grip?

Basically, they're the same exercise. But they can be done with a supinated grip (palms facing toward the body), or pronated (palms facing away). And of course you can do it with the arms at varying lengths apart. Usually in the supinated grip, hands are closer together, in pronated, such as typical in a lat pulldown, hands are placed further apart.

I find personally the supinated close grip is much easier.

This is a great way to start. Don't need any help. It's OK if you look like a retard. It's kinda fun having people watch that, they think you're cute. LOL. Just climb to the top of the apparatus, get yourself in the 'up' position of the exercise, then lower yourself slowly. Climb back up, repeat. Eventually you'll also be able to pull yourself up, and lower yourself, repeat.

I thought the Gravitron was a ride at the fairgrounds? The kind that spins around and round and when you're inside it, gravity presses you up against a wall, and it's so hard just to lift your arm up . . . my friends and I used to love to go inside that and try to do ab workouts . . .
