I just started a new weight training regime. My personal trainer has me doing resistance (weights) 4 days a week, and then cardio 4 days a week as well. I am eating relatively well (following the Precision Nutrition program), but no, I am not eating 100% clean. (I am eating MUCH better than I was before I started the program)
My question is this ...
I am now starting my 3rd week, and I have gained 2 pds from where I first started?! I didn't expect to drop weight like crazy at the start, but really, is this normal to GAIN?!
My trainer said that it IS normal, that the fat needs to convert to muscle first and that it will weigh more. I just wanted to check in with all of you knowledgeable folk and get your thoughts.
MANY Thanks!

Just water weight maybe?
Not eating as clean as you think?
I don't know.
But, I wish my fat 'converted' into muscle.....
I have weighed myself once in about 5 months.
Just go by how your clothes fit and how you look in the mirror--don't worry too much about the scale. :)

Erik is the one to read this, he has a brain for this kind of stuff. That being said, it's been 2 weeks. People generally don't post 2-week before and after pictures because, well, it's 2 weeks.
I'd wait a bit longer before I jumped to conclusions about what the scale says.
I once gained two pounds after...sleeping. Who knew.

Yours doesn't? Mine does. If I eat really, really clean my hair turns to money.

Good God. Fat does not convert to muscle.
If you've gained maybe you're eating above maintenance. Are you tracking your calories?

Fat does not convert to muscle...and muscle does not weigh more....a lb is a lb..muscle is more dense than the same amount of fat.

Are you tracking your calories?
Did you weigh yourself at the same time of day?
After sleeping the same amount of hours as the previous weigh-in?
After eating the same food?
In the same clothes?
On the same scale?
Did you weigh yourself again, right after you weighed yourself again?
Is the scale accurate?
Do you look better in the mirror?
Why do alligators have all those teeth and no toothbrush?
There are endless variables -it's been two weeks.

He may not have said, "converting to muscle" .. (I am paraphrasing). And yes, I do realize it's only been two weeks and am certainly not expecting miracles. I guess it's just a bit unnerving to be working SO frickin' hard and seeing the scale going in the opposite direction. That's all. :(

No, that's not what I meant.
In two weeks, it's not a good indicator of whether you're gaining muscle or losing fat or whatnot. It's too early to tell anything, and it's sure as hell too early to be disappointed.
Wait a bit longer, keep working, and track your progress over a more appropriate time frame.
No more sad faces, woman, it's only been two weeks!

the 2 lbs could be for any reason really. i'd worry more about how you look nekkid and in front of the mirror :) give yourself a bit of time.

I had a similar thing happen when I started working with Erik. Are you taking your measurements? My weight went up by a couple pounds the first few weeks, but my measurements went down. Don't get hung up on the numbers on the scale.

:ditto: If your measurements are going down who cares how much you weigh.
My question is this ...

1. And your measurements? How have they changed?
2. The scale isn't really an accurate representation of what's going on with your body. It tells you what you weigh, nothing more. It tells you nothing about how your composition is changing - whether you're gaining muscle/fat or losing fat/muscle. Keep that in mind.
3. It's quite normal at the onset of a weight training program for weight to jump slightly at first since glycolytic activity is going to be upregulated somewhat and your muscles are going to be holding onto more glycogen/carbohydrate/water. It normalizes.
4. And then just add to that, the wonders of the newbie effect, where simultaneous fat loss and muscle growth can be very easily achieved.
Point being, if your measurements are down, you're on the right track. If they're up .... well, perhaps what you're doing requires a little tweaking.
My trainer said that it IS normal, that the fat needs to convert to muscle first and that it will weigh more.
Retarded.

here is a scale reality check.....my friend, who fell of the fitness bandwagon in september, and has only exercised occasionally since then, called me today to tell me that she has not gained any weight in these 5 months, but has gained 3 inches in her waist, one in her hips, one in her chest and one around each arm......forget the scale and get out the tape to track your progress.....

Thank you to everyone for the feedback. In the past when I started a new program, it was usually heavy on the cardio and light on the weight training. As a result, I used to drop weight quickly in the first two weeks (about 5-10 pds in the first two weeks). I understand, now, that I was likely losing muscle and that doing things this way is better.
I will keep at it and try not to focus on the scale so much.

Better yet, throw it out the window. :D
