Excuse the dumbness... In terms of diet, Is HIIT considered a cardio day eating plan of less carbs or a training day eating plan of more carbs? I just read something and thought I'd ask.

Taken from Built's article on WBB forums:
What to eat: Because of the strong anaerobic component, feed HIIT the same as you would a lifting workout – target some carbohydrate and protein to provide an available pool of amino acids and to stimulate the cortisol-blunting insulin response.
For those of us whose diets are lower in carbs, you’ll want a little carb in you pre-workout or you WON’T be able to give these sprints your all, much like a lifting workout. If your carb consumption is ample, just focus on post-HIIT carbs. At least one study showed that post-workout carbs/protein didn't impact FFA burning post-exercise: “in the post-exercise recovery period, muscle glycogen resynthesis has high metabolic priority, resulting in post-exercise lipid combustion despite a high carbohydrate intake”. (10) So your post-workout Nitrean shake with dextrose is fine here.

Cardio day...less carbs. I had the same question for Erik when he put some of my HIIT on days without weights

I don't think I'd be able to do my HIIT on low carb days-- I always have at least a small amt. before and definitely some carbs after.

definitely low carb for me
definitely low carb for me
For you, relatively yes. Although still over 20% not including vegetables and you get carbs before and after the intervals.

If it is on a day with no training I treat it like a cardio/off day so no carbs after.

Is that because your total cals are really low on low carb days, and you're just too hungry, or do carbs really affect you that much?

I don't know really.....
No, my total cals aren't much lower on lower carb days--if at all.
I just feel dizzy if I do hard sprints without carbs.

Anyone do HIIT first thing in the morning on an empty stomach?

:shhh: :uhuh:
Yes, I do. I suspect it's a big no-no, but if I do ANY cardio with food on my stomach, I'll hurl and get wicked stomach cramps. HIIT especially gets my tummy going. If I'm gonna hurl at all, I'd rather it be the dry heaves over breakfast chunks! I do eat immediately after HIIT though.

You sure won't be. :finger:

What a nice, catabolic environment.

 Yep, I know...not exactly an ideal! But I really, really don't want to get up any earlier to train...4:30 sucks enough. I'm training for a race and really need the interval training to increase my speed. Once I get out of PT and finish healing up my delt, pec and bicep issues and can start working with you, you can set me on the right path, because I obviously need the help!

hsm, can you possibly sip a small protein shake before you go? Even half a scoop would be better than nothing.

Uh... okay. Then if one were doing her HIIT at 6:30 AM ... would one have eaten her first meal before that? Or could one get away with something lighter?:cardio:

Thanks Built, I've tried this and hurled as well. I've even tried sipping a bit during the recovery periods, but still puke. I've always had a weak stomach. Two out of 4 of my kids are the same way. We throw up over EVERYTHING. When I was pregnant, I threw up EVERY time I brushed my teeth! We're even known as the "pukers" at the dentist's office! :lol3: I can eat a little bit before I do my weight training, but not before cardio. I don't want to lose muscle, but I also have a 5 mile race coming up next month and don't want to suck it up too badly. After that race, I'm going to tone down the running a bit and concentrate more on my physique goals.

What I typically recommend in situations like this, assuming Meal 1 is too big to eat before HIIT and that the individual is unwilling to get up earlier, is to split Meal 1 into two half meals (splitting everything - protein/carbs). Have half before and half after and then resume your day's eating.

Here's the problem then. You're using HIIT for to train for performance gains ... and yet are training on an empty tank. Your AM HIIT performance is therefore going to suffer.
Try to get something small down - even just a little protein and maybe some Gatorade.

Yep...this is what I do
