I posted this on the "other" board earlier, before I learned where you all are. Anyway, here it is:

I've just begun to notice how many kinds of tuna there are...albacore, yellowfin and a new one I spotted today - Jack something....what is the difference? Does it matter?? The Jack one was higher in calories but twice as high in protein which I thought was interesting...Which kind is everyone buying?? Of course I always buy packed in water and usually low sodium - I was just wondering if the "species" matters.

Same here. If you have the extra $$ they also have it in packets that you don't have to drain the water. Those are great for "on the go" . . .

How do you eat your tuna? Do you mix it with anything?

Mostly plain. Sometimes I'll put it on top of my salad.

i bought the yellowfin and it tasted fine to me

i used to buy the solid white albacore but thats pretty pricey these days, plus more sodium

You're right it can get pricey buying white albacore, but my local grocery store just had a three day sale on it for 88 cents a can, and you know I bought the whole store out! Also, like I've probably mentioned numerous times before you can get W.A. Tuna if other people favor that at Wal-Mart for less than a dollar a can. I'm always broke so I'm always trying to find the deals haha.

If I recall correctly, white tuna has something like 3x the mercury that light tuna does. Kind of odd, considering that white seems to be the pricier of the two.

i can't eat any tuna out of a can anymore. i burned myself out. The only tuna i have is tuna sashimi which i just had tonight!

Maybe this has something to do with why I am nuts...
It's the only kind that comes "low sodium" though...I hate salty tuna ( )

Why? Is it that you don't like the taste or is there some sort of evilness hidden in the can, that I am not aware of?

I don't like it. I mean, it's not bad, but I'd rather eat more chicken.

Correct. Or eggs.

I just find those inconvenient, and I have to eat so many to get any significant protein.

Skipjack is what you're thinking of. I think the main difference between the species is where they are, and what they eat. That determines what kind of nutritional value they have. (You are what you eat! ) The price probably has more to do with how hard the fishermen had to work to get the fish as how good for you it is. If you like what you see on the nutrition label and the price is right, go for it.

Adding a packet of splenda to the can cuts the salty taste way down.

Chunk light tuna has less mercury than albacore, but I avoid eating tuna altogether b/c of the mercury.

 :barf:

I eat light tuna canned in water. I usually just eat it plain out of the can.

Lately, though, for a P + F meal, I add 1 Tbsp olive oil, salt, pepper and a little basil. Heat in the microwave for 1 min. and it's really good!

I love tuna/salsa combo too...had to cut down on my salsa tho, cuz it occured to me that just cuz it was organic didn't mean it was a free for all...LOL...3g of sugar for 4tbs..... I was using a wee bit more than that.

I like it mixed with mustard as well (as salsa). If I get tired of canned tuna, I just get the fresh fish. YUM. Ahi tuna...

I can only eat solid white albacore. Around here it's 1.75 or more a can which sucks but if it helps me get where I gotta go then it's worth it!

I don't do tuna or eggs. Tuna is too dry and eggs make me gag.

I like tuna. It's way up further on my list of likes than chicken right now. Olive oil and a little taco sauce just for flavor is good. I need to find new stuff to put on it for flavor though.

I eat light tuna canned in water 1) bc of price 2) bc of mercury concerns. I eat so much of it!

It also helps to wash the tuna off under the tap to take the saltiness out of it if that bugs ya.

Hmm - awesome ideas in here... I'm going to have to try some salsa or different spices with it... Someone once told me tuna with jam was really good!?! Can't say I've tried that one yet!!!
All I've tried is lemon juice and celery mixed in with it - must say, I have to force it down.... definitely NOT my favourite!
