View Full Version : Hair people help!
I need advice from people who work with hair.
I have always gotten my hair professionally colored, and right now I have it colored dark brown from my natural blonde hair. to make a long story short, my bugdet right now doesn't allow for me to spend so much money on my hair, but I wanted to keep it dark until summer. my problem is I have soo much natural red in my hair-that I hate! so with the box colors from the store (and even from my expensive hair dresser) it turns red and brassy really quick:dry: this color faded in 2 weeks (and yes I only wash my hair every other day).
So is there a great boxed product out there that won't turn my hair orangy red? or any advice at all?
much thanks!

Not a hair expert, but my blonde gets brassy sometimes.
I think in your case, you want to stick to an cooler brown, maybe with a bit of beige/ash. Definitely avoid anything 'golden', 'warm', etc.
One of those colour shampoo and conditioners might help, too. Aveda Blue Malva minimizes the brassiness in my hair.

Yes I have this issue too. I go with colors that are in the ash family as it has some purples( from what I was told) in them

Don't get those grocery store box kinds. Hit your local beauty supply (like sally's). It's better quality color and won't damage your hair as much.
Try a demi-permanent first. They're like 6 bucks including developer (you get the developer in a separate bottle, so be sure to get the one that corresponds with the brand and type of color you're getting). The ones in the beauty supply places will usually have the color components listed on them too, ie, what colors make up the specific tone. So in your case, there will be browns that have a red base (they'll say something like red, sienna, chestnut on them). You want to avoid those ones with the warm/red undertones and go for some that have more of a chocolate or even blue undertone. Something cool.
Try out the demi-permanent color, see how it looks over the first week. If you're happy with that tone, go get the same thing in the permanent. If it's not quite what you're looking for, it washes out fairly quick and the supply stores also carry a gentle demi-permanent color remover. Takes it right out.

I went from having super blonde hair to chocolate brown hair. I had red coming through within a few washes. I've started to go back to blonde, slowly, as I counld't stand all the red.
The dark hair does look great on you! If you figure it out, let me know what works for you!

it's a myth-I asked my Dr's 1st and they said it was fine. and then I further researched it and found it was fine, just to be on the safe side wait after 1st trimester:)
and Lindsey I'll let you know. it's not easy being blonde:lol3:
(Lindsey-well see avi to see if you like it, I think it looks pretty good:))
so when I bought the type of color that's in my hair now, I also bought a different brand to try too.
I was going to use it tonight (since the other was a demi-perm) but the instructions aren't really anything. it says put on clean towel dried hair. does that mean it should be fully dry right? then wash it as usual right after the time is up?
thanks!!!

I prefer not to wash my hair immediately prior to coloring. You want a little bit of the natural oils in there to sort of protect your hair from overprocessing. I wait half a day to a full day after I wash to do the color.
Hair should be dry.
I prefer not to wash after a coloring too. Bleaching, yes, color, no. Immediately washing can strip some of the color right away. It needs a little time to really 'set' if that makes sense. Rinse until the water is clear, then do a good condition, leaving it on for at least 5 minutes. Feel free to wash it the next day.
Another little tip, once you get the color on, wrap your hair in saran wrap. It will help hold heat in, which is factor in the developing process.

Not a problem, hon. Just divide your hair up into 4 or more sections, put them in little ponytails or clip them so you don't have the length getting in your way, paint the color through your roots first (since that's the part that takes the longest to take hold of the color), then start working it down through the length. Once you get a little ways down the length, you can just pile it all on top of your head, squirt a bunch of color on there and work it around like shampoo so that it gets through to your ends. Hold it all together with a clip, wrap it up in that plastic wrap, and if you want, take a blow dryer to it on a very light heat setting to warm it up a little for a couple minutes, then sit back and let it process.
Once you get it all in there, you can take a cotton ball with alcohol to the areas where any color got on your skin, like the tops of your ears and along your forehead.
