Depends on the extra ingredients in the "protein" shake.

It would be like living off a feeding tube for life. Not crunch to munch.
I would NOT recommend or encourage it at all.

I would like to ask also if you mean ONLY protein shakes (no added carbs/fats etc.) or protein shakes as the only source of protein.

I think you would lack alot of fiber and really mess up the body after a long time.

Sure, for awhile, then your body goes into extreme ketosis and your kidneys eventually shut down after you smell like ammonia for a month.

I think you'd mess yourself up pretty bad. And, would probably have to retrain your system eventually to be able to eat normal foods again.

I think if I were in a bind with money or travel and could only have PP for a couple days I would say it would not be bad. But I think I would not last any longer then that

The answer is no. You would also have to get your essential fatty acids. This could be similar to a PSMF diet if you went low enough on your calories. I wouldn't recommens such a diet, as you'd probablly be very hungry on it. You could also have problems if you didn't supplement enough fiber.
Over at T-mag, someone wrote about such a diet - The Velocity Diet (http://www.t-nation.com/findArticle.do?article=05-009-diet).

Whether or not you went into "deep ketosis" would depend on the amount of calories you ate. Such a diet wouldn't be harmful to your kidneys, and you'd only have amonia breath while you were on the diet.

Actually, it would harm your kidneys over the long term, Jeffrey. You know that!
And you do smell like ammonia, not just your breath.

Protein shakes (whey typically) digest relatively quickly. Wouldn't you be awfully hungry?

Am I confused?
I hate being gone this long.

Rage, EFA's wouldnt be the issue to pick up on first.
and there would be other issues before any potential kidney issues ever showed up.

Say you are going on holiday for two weeks and you're all over the place and don't want to eat greasy pub food ( just as an example) could you just lug pp around and consume that?

No fat?
Certain vitamins are fat soluble only. Even if you took a multi, you'd be in trouble.

2 weeks is not enough for anything to happen to anyone
except being mentally challanged because who the hell would want to go on a holiday and eat nothing but protein powder.

understand that fat soluble does not mean that fat is required for their uptake.

Protein shakes are generally low in a lot of micronutrients.

You'd have to get your fiber from somewhere, and it's certainly not going to come from the protein.
And without adequate fiber, you're going to miss out on a lot of the benefits of protein anyway.

Fat soluble is just indicating what they solubilise in, not what they are taken up throug the gut in.
Typucally they are called lipids, or something that is soluble in an organic solivent. Just like fatty acids.
