Would 45 degree leg presses be a good substitute for squats?

I would say no. You can use the leg press but I wouldn't consider it a substitution for squats.

Why are you wanting a substitutes for squats? They should be the staple of your program IMO.

Nope... You should do them both... You could do Squats first, then leg press, then leg curls superset with stiff legged deadlifts and then top it all off with 4 sets of seated calf raises... :train: And don't forget... Squeeze those glutes at the top of the movement..

Robben, I think you're obsessed with the idea of squeezing your glutes.

The only reason I was thinking of subbing them is because my shoulders were hurtng. But I actually found one of those soft padding things that go around the bar, and did the quats :)

Don't use those. I refer to them as "tampons," because only pussies need them.

What would you suggest if your shoulders are in pain?

Why are "tampons" bad to use?

I don't know if those bar pads are inherently bad, but they seem to throw of my form somewhat. I have some flexibility issues so I have to watch that my torso doesn't lean too far forward, and the pad seems to worsen the lean.

I think his point was they are for pussies, not bad to use.

your body will get used to it, and it won't hurt anymore. I know for me it took over a couple of months, but now I rarely have an issue.

What H&Gs mom said...once your traps have developed, you won't have a problem. This will come from upper body work as well as from squatting. Also check your placement of the bar, the slightest change can make a BIG difference.
Godd luck!

I've always just refered to them as pussy pads. Most of the people I've seen use them have the bar too high so that it's against their neck (which may be because of the pad). I imagine that is painful, so I can see why they use them, or they could just put the bar where it belongs, their traps.

This is true. It's like walking outside in your bare feet. It hurts at first but then your feet get used to it.
I'm all about analogies today...WTF?

Just lower the bar, don't use the pad. Messes with form, and messes with RC stuff...bad, bad gym toy.
