View Full Version : Fish Oil/Flax Oil
How much fish oil should I take a day? The bottle says take 2 caplets once a day after a meal....i also have flax oil which says take 1 teaspoon, should I just do one or the other?

I think Thunder will tell you that, being a woman, your body can process fish oil more efficiently. You don't need both, so just take fish oil. I take 6 - 9 fish oil caplets per day.

Flax contains omega 3 6 and 9. Fish oil omega 3.
Most people get enough of 6 and 9, so I would just go for the fish oil.
Why do women process fish oil better than guys?

Actually it's that fish oil is better for women (than flax), particularly as they age because the converson of ALA, from something like flax, to the fish oils fats, EPA/DHA, is enzyme dependent (delta-6 desaturase I think).
One, the enzyme conversion isn't great to begin with and two, it becomes even less efficient with age.

WOW didnt know that! Thanks. :)
I recently bought some fish oil caps and was wondering... do they have to be kept refrigerated?
It doesn't say on the bottle that it does but I used to take Udo's oil and I had to keep that stuff in the fridge at all times.
And does fish oil spoil? I've read conflicting posts on a few forums about this hence my question about keeping fish/flax oils in the fridge.

I don't refridgerate mine, but I do make sure the lid is on tight. These fats are highly unstable and can oxidize easily.
Refridgerating them can't hurt.

Is 6 fish oil caps a day too much if you're still getting fats from nut butters, fish, etc? Should you reduce the fish oil on higher fat days, i.e. low carb days?
And are you taking too many if you're freezing cold all the time? Does that mean my blood is too thin from them? My mother insists this is true.

I thought that you would increase the fats on low carb days while carb cycling? Eh, I'm probably wrong...

Thank you for the info Thunder.
I've gotta work on my quoting. I don't care for the double/triple quotes in each post. :uuhh:

No, you'd reduce your other fats. Fish oils are your number one priority in fat intake.

Hmmm - in the summer and fall I eat a lot of salmon, and when I know I'm eating it later in the day, I normally skip my Udo's.
Thoughts on Udo's oil?
The only thing I don't like about Udo's oil is it's not very convenient. And if I bought the caps, I'd have to take geez... I forget how many just to get the equivalent of one tbsp of the oil.
This is what Udo Erasmus says about fish oils. I always wondered why he didn't add EPA & DHA to his blend. Any comments? Anyone? Especially the part in blue.
Why is there no EPA and DHA in your oil blend?
The oil blend builds the foundation for essential fat nutrition. essential fatty acids are major nutrients and we need quite a lot of them. They serve functions in our membranes and our cells in addition to their roles as EPA, DHA and other derivatives, and prostaglandins.
If given enough of the starting material (n-6 LA and n-3 LNA), the body can usually convert essential fatty acids into the derivatives and prostaglandins, but cannot convert prostaglandins and derivatives back into essential fatty acids again. Therefore, the essential fat-rich oils are an important function in this regard.
I recommend that one first lays down a proper foundation. Then, if there remains specific problems (such as premenstrual syndrome or rheumatoid arthritis) that are not addressed by an optimum intake of essential fat-rich, properly balanced, organically grown, freshly made, properly packaged, and properly used oils, add EPA and DHA to this foundation.
I prefer toro (belly) sushi from albacore (white) tuna as my source of EPA and DHA. Salmon, mackerel, sardines, and rainbow trout are other good sources. You may find further benefits from eating such fish. Most people will not need them, but they may help a small percentage of the population.
I prefer eating fish to swallowing fish oil capsules because of the processing damage that occurs in fish oils. Fish oils are very difficult to work with. The "fishy" flavor of encapsulated oils or cod liver oil is actually rancidity. Fresh fish does not have this taste or smell. I also have concerns about fish liver oils. They are most likely to contain (and concentrate) highly toxic industrial chemicals such as PCBs.

He's selling stuff. He's wrong.

Enzyme - delta-6 desaturase - dependent. It's acitivty decreases drastically with age, especially in women
Hmmm... well then he should be stripped of his "Godfather of Fats and Oils" title. Or whatever he's known as.

I've seen him speak. Surely it's a great product, but listening to him talk about it is a bit much. Like guys gaining 10lbs of muscle in a month when they start using Udo's Choice oil. Come on.
