You're not supposed to cook it. Was the one you ate ripe? Avocados should be soft when you eat them.

I  avocado when you squeeze a little lime juice in it, but I do not like it on its own...

hmmm...maybe not ripe. Firm and 'meaty'. Now that I've cut into it, will it still be okay when it gets ripe? How can you ripen it quicker? I want to know before I send paperwork into Erik. Don't want to checkmark that sucker off unless I know for sure I like it. :hehe:

put it in a paper bag with an apple or banana to ripen quicker.... however I think if you've already cut into it, that ones a goner. (I think, anyways)

I don't think it will ripen now that you've cut it. You're just going to have to try again with another one. :lol3:

Put it in a closed brown paper bag. It should ripen in a day!

I love to squirt a little lime or lemon juice onto some smooshed up avocado and eat it on crackers or tortillas! Mmmmmm! I also like them cut up into salads. I also like them cut up on my grilled chicken sammiches. I also like them plain.

Everyone in my house hates them. I say "Yay! More for me." Send me your ripe, your unripe, your poor uneaten avocados. Let them rest upon my plate patiently waiting to be devoured! YUM!

It's going to turn all dark and icky now that you have cut it. They are best plain or with a little bit of lemon or lime squirted on them. I cut them in half, take out the pit and eat it right out of the skin (when ripe, of course) with a fork. I never thought I liked avocado and then was educated by my DH (many years ago)- I had never had a ripe one.

I love avocadoes!! When i wasnt on Erik's plan i would always have a sandwich with smooshed up avocado prepared with lemon juice, lots of salt (surprised nobody mentioned salt) and sometimes a little canola oil.... then put some turkey deli meat and a scrambled egg! :yum:

Funny, I've had tons of avocado in the US and Mexico where I liked them more or less. But every single avocado I've bought here, either turned rotten , were unripe or just plain  :yucky:
So, I gave up on them and am now trying to develop a taste for olives. I'd discovered a very nice type and then bought the wrong ones later (threw them all out).

I just don't bother anymore, as they aren't all that cheap.

ditto this, i throw about 2 whole avacados, lemon juice to taste, clove of minced garlic, bunch of cilantro, green onion, cayanne pepper and dash of water in the blender, adjust ingredients to taste and yum!!!! I just scoop out however much at a time and eat on just about anything! I love this on omlets, with chips, with veggies, etc.

So okay, you seem to have to mix it with something, from what I'm reading. I'll give it another try. Not getting my hopes up though. :lol3: Not after that last taste.

If it's a good one, you don't need to mix it with anything - but you don't usually know this until you try it! :p Mixing it with stuff can help if the flavor isn't the best.
I think the best ones are from California, but me being in South Carolina, the ones we get are from Chile or Mexico. The ones from Mexico can be good, but the ones from Chile tend not to be. My DH is from California, so when we visit his family there and his sister is Arizona, the avocadoes are always SO good!!!

When I was in my 20's, I used to buy avacados all of the time, not to eat though. You can put the pit in water and it will sprout roots and you can grow an avocado plant. Shove toothpicks into the pit and place in a glass of water with the bottom covered about 1/4 of an iinch. Eventually it will sprout roots.

Doing that when I was a kid is the closest I've ever gotten to eating an avocado
