If one is eating a restricted calorie diet, is it better that the calories come from lean protien or does it matter at all? I mean, if the calories are what you are focusing on, is it more like "a calorie is a calorie is a calorie"?

I think it goes something like this. A calorie is a calorie...so if you are trying to lose "weight"...then it doesn't matter WHERE your calories are coming from.

But we are all trying to lose fat and preserve muscle. And muscle needs protein. So you need to keep the protein up...and make sure you are lifting heavy.

I think if you hit the minimum protein and fat requirements...the rest doesn't matter so much.

You get some carbs, right?

Ya, but going lower calorie...it doesn't leave a lot of room. And you still need to have some sort of nutrition. And eating lots of carbs sometimes makes people binge or hungrier. And if you are IR..you are going to want to be lower carb.

I can't answer this stuff. We need Thundy.

Why? you're trying to change your body composition and to achieve a lean look and preserve your muscle you're better to eat your required protein and fat, and be selective of your carbs, just MHO

Oh, I know.Ali and Ana you are right. I am just being a big baby. I have talked to Erik and with my thyroid issues and being IR it is for the best.

But I can still whine that I miss them though.:mecry: My kingdom for pasta. I am Italian. My grandmother is rolling over in her grave at the thought of me not having pasta.:lol3: In some countries this would be viewed as unnecessary torture. But I am tough. I can withstand such extreme measures to get to my goal. I just might drive everyone else nuts while I am doing it.:hehe:

Donna, how did you come to find out you were IR?

I guess it just seems that I do better on lower carb, I don't know if I am actually IR.Using the term loosely. That is where Erik has me headed right now in consideration of my thyroid issues and I guess how my progress is going. Plus, I am wanting to compete. If I was not competing I guess I would take this process more slowly but I need to try to be ready by August. He is the one in charge and knows what he is doing. So I am trusting in that.

I have a hypothyroid. I was without insurance for a while and decided I did not need my synthroid anymore. Well , big mistake. I actually got used to being tired and just plug right through it. Well, I wound up in my doctors office sick and he yelled at me for stopping it. We just took some blood tests and are getting me back on meds soon.

Yeah, but after reading the article in the thread about it radgirl put up I think it is being misused. Or I am misusing it. Hmmm. I guess I should be using good or poor carb tolerance rather than IR, or is there a difference?

Erik, can you come in here and explain all of this to us exactly? If you get your protiens and EFA's in what is the reasoning for deciding how much carbs or not? Or is this more complicated and depending on the individual to generalize?

Aww hon. So sorry to hear that. I won't get started on the whole health insurance thing. Whatever the case, glad you will be getting on meds very soon. I know what you mean by getting used to being tired and just going through the day. It's like you are on auto-pilot and just keep on keeping on, till you can't do it anymore.

YES! That is the answer I was looking for. Crap. I'm so innarticulate these days. I don't know what's gotten into me. I actually read AND understood your answer. YAY! I must be getting better. I have suffered from some kind of temporary (I HOPE!) retardation for a few days. LOL.

So, if I'm low cal, I'm keeping my protein up and I will lift heavy. The simple answer this simpleton-gal needed! THANKS!

I have insurance now but it still sucks. They actually did not want to pay for my daughters doctor visits for ear infections because they said they are pre-existing.:eh: I had to have the pediatrician call to tell them that is not so and to pay. It is amazing how much money we pay them and how much they refuse to pay out. :grumble:

Not quite. You're right!! I forgot to add: Take lots of stimulants! :thumb:

I know there's more to it, but I guess I'm so used to eating healthy foods that it comes as second nature to choose good foods. I'll admit that that wasn't such good advice for someone starting out, but it is the route that I use.
