I've tryed everything, it seems as I get older my hair becomes dryer. I do blow dry but not for very long--10-15 minutes tops and most of the time it's every other day. I condition the crap out of my hair--pantene, keratase, bumble & bumble, phyto products are what I 've tryed and deep condition once a week. To no avail :(. The only time it feels really healthy and shiny is of course when I go to my salon. Is it my diet? does anybody else have this problem? Any recommendations? Thanks

are you taking fish oil? That should help.

Ya, fish oil capsules, I take about 6 a day. It's just weird I don't color my hair either so it's not damaged, just dry

Try using a natural bristle brush when drying your hair. I switched to using one and my hair is so much shinier and smoother. The style hold so much better too. I hardly even have to do anything but dry it now. Who would have thought?!!

hmm--maybe my brush is the culprit--I use one that my hairdresser recommended because it holds the style better, but it is a little rough. Any styling products that work? I'm currently using Kiehls Grooming Creme.

Do you color your hair? Do you have hard water? If you live in the Midwest you probably do and need to use a clarifying product on occasion to remove the mineral build-up. Also look at your shampoo. If you only use one high-quality professional hair care product it should be shampoo. You can condition until the cows come home, but if you're washing your hair with crap it will look like crap.

I don't color my hair-- may be a dumb question, but how do you know if you have hard water? I live in So. Cal and I thought maybe with the humidity it would be nice and soft, but it worse than when I lived in CO! I've used Pantene forever and alternate between the clarifing and thickening, since it always worked, maybe it's time for a change. I was under the impression that shampoo was not important but the conditioner that made the difference. I learn something new here every day! thanks

Every hairdresser I have ever been to has told me that Pantene products are one of the worst you can use..especially for buildup. They use wax in their products.

How old are you? Any other issues..your estrogen levels could be low or it could be your thyroid levels as well...how is your skin? Tiredness etc??

So Cal often has hard water. Does your soap rinse off easily, or do you have to work at it? Hard water = soap rinses away easily. Also, So Cal has a lot of pollution. If you live inland where it collects, it will have some effect. A clarifying shampoo should help with that, to. Try a new brush, try a new shampoo... Good luck! :)

I've heard bad things about Pantene from stylists as well.

Are you washing your hair everyday? Unless it's very short, you don't need to. My hair is below my shoulders and I wash it every 2-3 days. On the alternate days, I spray it with a refresher and blast it with cool air.

You know I just can't do this and I know many who do..but doesn't it get musty from all the sweat? Maybe everyone doesn't sweat as much as I do when they work out but there is just no way I can not wash my hair everyday.

I apologize in advance for a bit of a thread hijack -
but to get rid of the bulidup from Pantene products (I've used them for quite some time), would I just need to use clarifying products for a while? Don't they tend to dry out your hair? (My ends seem to go crispy quite easily!)

I've got it timed out so that I wash it on an HIIT day, when I get really sweaty (I only get marginally sweaty training).

There are also dry shampoos (I know Bumble & Bumble makes one), although I haven't tried them.

Wow--I love Pantene, especially their conditioners, time for a change. Age-early 30. My skin has always been dry, but my hair used to be so soft and shiny, but lately I have been really tired in the afternoon and I need to take 20 minutes naps around 3:00 or else I get REALLY tired. I thought it was due to low carb days-and I LOVE low carb days :). I never even thought of estrogen levels, last time I checked my thyroid levels they were fine (a year ago). Low levels can be the result of dry skin and hair huh? time to visit the doc!

I used to have very dry hair- when i started adding more fats into my diet that really helped. Also--I switched to use Aveda Almond Cherry Bark deep conditioning treatment each time I condition my hair....works great!

Products with Dimethicone in them make my hair really shiny without weighing it down. I like Joico's K-Pak, especially the Liquid Reconstructor. How the hair is finished will make the most noticeable difference. If the cuticle isn't laying flat and tight, the hair won't appear shiny. The ph of your shampoo and conditioner matters a lot too.

There's this stuff they just came out with in drugstores - a version of what they have in salons - by John Frieda... it's color glosser. Basically you wash and condition your hair, then put this stuff on it for 3 minutes in the shower, and it makes your hair really glossy and shiny. They have one for each color and it's about $10. I've been using the blonde one for a few weeks and even my boyfriend noticed the difference- helps with styling damage too.

Good to know about Pantene - I had always thought that was a good brand to use. I guess I won't be buying that anymore. I am going to check out the Aveda stuff. I actually asked a girl one time what she used on her hair becuase it was so shiny and she had mentioned that she used Aveda - I may have to get some.

I use Pantene and my hair is super soft and shiny. It's the only product that consistently works on my hair.

My daughter suffers from extremely dry hair, & skin, for her what work's is olive oil I massage it in her hair once or twice a week, it works great, or I rub a little bit of conditioner in her hair & leave it on for the day, perferably one that has shine in it

Have you tried sitting under a dryer w/ conditioner in your hair after having it washed? I don't know if this only works on black hair, but every time I have it done my hair comes out soft w/ great sheen.

What colour is your hair?

You could get your hairdresser to put in a clear semi permanent if you're not interested in changing the colour.

Also there are lots of shine sprays or shine drops on the market.

EFA's have helped tremendously. Also a hair product called Biosilk is excellent. Expensive but gives great shine.

Oh, and John Frieda's extra strength de-frizz "something or other" with silicone helped enhance the shine in my hair. :)

I only wash my hair every 3 to 4 days in the winter, more often in the summer. It is to my thighs and takes FOREVER to dry when it's not hot outside (I don't blowdry at all.)

I use Pantene shampoo and conditioner, and Aussie 3 Minute Miracle afterwards-this ensures that I can actually get the brush through my hair after I wash it. Every two weeks to once a month I use a hot oil treatment, too.

I use Kolesterol Conditioner every couple months and it does wonders. My aunt buys it for me at a beauty supply store. It's super thick and you had to put a garbage back (or something) on your hair for an hour with it. Next day hair will look horrible. After that it looks great for months.

ton's of great ideas--thanks! I changed my brush and bought the Aveda conditioner, it smells good enough to eat, and am trying Sebastian laminating drops. The clear semi permanent sounds interesting. Also adding more fish oil to my diet :)

more great ideas--haven't checked this in a while. I have since been using a natural bristle round brush and the Aveda Deep conditioning Cherry Almond Vanilla Conditioner every five shampoos. So far I've noticed that my hair feels softer, but it's not shinier. The laminating drops made it look greasy. So I"m searching for a great every day conditioner and shampoo. I think I'll try the Biosilk line--it sounds like what I really need is a great shampoo. thanks again

Also added more Omega Fish Oil, it's doing wonders to my nails :)

I have very long hair and I get it colored every 5 weeks. My hair is super shiny. I wash it only 2x/week. I use a boars hair brush (round brush) and an ionic blow dryer ($180). After blowdrying, i apply a smoothing serum. Results- super shiny locks! ;)

Which smoothing serum do you use? I've tried different ones, but always end up looking greasy.

Fish oils definitely helped, but my stylist also turned me on to TIGI's S Factor Smoothing Lusterizer and an ION hairdryer and they have worked wonders on my hair. I highly recommend it. It's a little on the pricey side $25/bottle, but it has really helped me.

Smoothing Spray made by Hyashi. I spray 3 squirts on my hands then run through my hair, being carefulk not to "drench" my hair but rather "skim" over it. Good luck ;)

Aveda has one out for fine/thin hair- which would work great- designed not to weigh hair down or make it greasy- I cannot remember the name, but it is in a light blue bottle.(well, as of 3 years ago  )

Drug stores and discount stores may carry them but the quality is not as good as the ones that are sold in beauty supply stores. i say invest the money in a good quality dryer and it will pay for itself just by how you look with new luscious locks! ;)

I had a lot of hair issues until I switched to Tony & Guy products. I highly reccomend them (even though they are kind of expensive). Also if you have a Tony & Guy Salon in your area...try getting your hair cut there...they do an amazing job and actually cut hair a lot different than normal salons.

You may want to try shampoos for black hair. They are much more moisturizing. Cream of Nature is a great brand. You should also look into coconut oil. They sell it with the cooking oils at health food stores. It turns into a solid at room temp. Just put a bit in your hand and it will turn into a liquid. Rub just a bit into you hair. A little goes a long way.

I shampoo like normal, mix 1/2 of apple cider vinegar with 1/2 of water. Pour onto hair. I then shampoo again so it doesn't smell too bad. I always get compliments on how pretty and shiny my hair is. It really cleans it well and is good for dry scalp.
