I live in Houston and the best time to run outside is early mornings on the weekends, but I'm not sure I can do 6 miles on an empty stomach. How long would it take for some oats to digest to give me the energy to run?

When I ran long distances, I always waited at least a half hour to an hour before running, otherwise I'd get pukey. Are you prepping for a marathon?

Just a 1/2 marathon; I am not a serious runner by any means as this is just for fun. But it's so hot here that I have to get up early to run which means even earlier to eat something and let it digest.

1/2 hour should be fine :)

Or do something lighter - whey protein + gatorade or maltodextrin.

I would agree with having something lighter before you run, looks like you are doing a moderate distance run and if I had oatmeal or something heavy like that I would definitely be sick. I normally just have a glass of gatorade and bring water during my run. You could even bring a small bottle of gatorade with you because you might need it half way through.

p.s. how hot does it get there? I from northern alberta and we might see 28 degrees on a good day! :)

By mid Summer it is easy 100 everyday plus humidity. Right now the morning runs will probably be about 70 degree'sand will continue to get warmer as Summer progresses which means I will have to get up earlier as the runs get longer.

Psshh. You call yourself northern alberta! Ha! You're the deep south to me -I'm in Fort Mc. Ok, I'll stop hijacking now.

tanya, I have absolutely no concept of this.

in Texas, anything below 90 degrees during the summer is cool.

Ha Ha! I guess not as far north as FtMac. But I couldn't imagine running outside in 90 degree weather! I thought I was going to die yesterday running when it was about 25 degrees C.

I'm in San Antonio, so I also know about Texas summers. However, I understand Houston has much higher humidity. Earlier this week, we had a "cool" front come through. Temperatures were in the mid-80's. *brrrr*

That's what I told you I thought would be best, a protein drink.

Hey fitnesschick I live in St. Albert. Not so northern as some have pointed out  but close enough. What about you?

I did my 6.5k run last night around 8pm, it was soooo hot! 25C is hot to me! I ate my salad with craisons and sunflower seeds and my bean salad around 530 thank goodness. If I had anything in my stomach it would have been a bad scene.

I am trying to increase my speed so I was working pretty hard...I am down to 32.05 for 6.5 km...what is everyone else at?
