If you haven't read this, you may find it interesting. Someone just sent it to me.

During the semistarvation phase of the experiement, food became a principal topic of conversation, reading, and daydreams.Sounds like competition season around here! :funny:

The volunteers? often reported that they got a vivid vicarious pleasure from watching other persons eat or from just smelling food.I've done this.

The consumption of coffee and tea increased so dramatically that the men had to be limited to 9 cups per day; similarly, gum chewing became excessive...Many of these things are common w/ contest prep.

During the 12-week refeeding phase:shock:

During the eighth week of starvation, one volunteer flagrantly broke the dietary rules, eating several sundaes and malted milks; he even stole some penny candies.:funny: :funny: :funny:

"No. 108 would eat and eat until he could hardly swallow any more and then he felt like eating half an hour later" I think I'm No. 108

I only read half. I'll comment on the rest a bit later. Interesting indeed!!

This article is good, and really true. And Blondell, I know you joke, but it describes what happens to people with EDs very well, and it is quite serious. While these subjects were only "starved" for a brief amount of time, and recovered...most people who suffer from EDs live with them forever.

I think a lot of it can be applied to those prepping for a contest- the mood/depression, lack of energy, over consumption of coffee/tea...just this of that but ten-fold..it isn't something anyone would want to, or should have to live with

Thanks for sharing this

I wasn't joking.

I went through much of what the article talked about during my last prep. Yes, I sniff food I can't have AND get pleasure from it during prep.

I buy candles that smell like food :D

I wasn't saying you didn't go through some of it at all, I even said I can see how people prepping for contests can go through some of that.

I'm just saying...truly starving is an AWFUL experienace and really does f*** with you

I do this. Especially with bread and other items that I can't eat due to my stomach. It does give me some sense of satisfaction. On the flipside though, I find I get very angry because I can't eat certain things. Don't know if that happens to others.

I've finally started paying attention to my body and backing off the foods it can't handle anymore, but it still aggravates me when I can't have something I really like :tantrum: Since I had my gallbladder out, there are so many things that can make me just absolutely sick if I try eating any sizeable amount of it. Now I just end up cooking or baking those things for other people and enjoying the smell. Still working on how I'm going to deal with losing my Splenda...even though my belly problems have been 100% better since I stopped it. I still miss it in my iced tea and in my oatmeal :mecry: I was checking out Stevia today in the grocery store...pretty pricey around here, I would like to try it before buying 100 packets!

Why cant you eat certain things? Allergies?

Stevia is VERY good. I buy the liquid stuff though, never had the packs. If it tastes like the liquid it is well worth the $$

I just ran past this in search for my next reading material. Just thought I'd post it for anyone wanting more info on this particular study.

B, I read that book. Excellent. I recommend it. It describes the experiment very well, and a lot about Keyes himself.

This might be a really dumb question, but what exactly is a refeed and when/why is it done?

interesting, I guess this explains why all of a sudden I am hooked on the Food Network and when I watch TV it's always some sort of cooking show, I suppose I do get some sort of satisfaction out of watching them cook up something so fabulous!!!

I've had the sore jaw, from chewing too much gum, I drink excessive amounts of coffee. My daughter says I make really gross food concoctions. I've binged more times than I can count. I watch the food network when I am running on the treadmill.

When I chop off three fingers - then you know I'm really far gone. :suicide:

I have had...or have seen most of these effects from dieting...not to such extreme...but still prevalent. It worries me a little/lot.

One man even began rummaging through garbage cans.
Anyone have this problem?

Ali, its just the physiological reaction to dieting. Don't know if it makes you feel better, but refeeds and breaks make it much better. And once the diet is over, it goes away.

This is what I was going to say....

People with true EDs cant break the cycle and the thinking. They can't stop dieting on their own...you have control over your foods...you are fine

It is unfortunately a very real thing for people with EDs, to rummage through garbage cans, especially if they know there is edible food in there

Wow, absolutely fascinating article! I agree at the end where it says that this study can be useful to help patients with ED explain their symptoms and reduce their defensiveness.... which can be invaluable for some of these folks in treatment.

Also makes me thankful that I don't suffer from an ED...

Almost, the time I threw the pb away, because it was a trigger food for me, and then wanted to change my mind a few hours later. :eh:

Yeah, I've done this in some of my more obsessive phases. I learned to pour something gross over the food before I threw it away so I wouldn't be tempted.

I can honestly say that I have experienced a good portion of what was discussed in that article. True, the fine line between someone with an ED vs. someone without is the ability to stop, know, and understand what is going on with your body. I have had my fair share of binging, starving, attempted purging, etc.... If someone ever catches me rummaging through the garbage for food, please get me help (I say this light-heartedly). However, I have done some not so great things that I will not mention here.

Carry on...

just once?!

I've done that w/ nutella and chocolate. I've learned that I have to empty out whatever it is. Things just don't taste good mixed w/ coffee grounds. :lol3:

This reminds me of the Sex & the City episode where Miranda throws out the chocolate cake (or brownies, something like that), goes back and eats it anyway, and then finally ruins it by pouring dish soap on top to stop herself from eating more.

I've done that once in awhile, usually with cheaper junk food like chocolate. Can't bring myself to ruin a good cheesecake...

I remember that. Funny episode. I have thrown food away, but feel so guilty about it afterwards. Double-edge sword.

Is that why I get the oddest looks from people? Regardless of dieting or not, I make weird food cuz I eat weird food. Yaaaay me! As long as I'm not diggin' it out the trash can, I think we are ok. However, the 5 minute rule does apply (times may slightly increase/decrease depending on the food and where it has landed.)
