View Full Version : Cramping uterus shortly after HIIT

Hi,
I just stumbled apon this forum the other day. I could read and read for hours.... so much good info! Thank you. I'm in pretty good shape but of course I want better. I lift and do cardio 3 or 4 times a week. But no cardio like HIIT! I decided to give it a try... last night was the first time, tonight was the second. I only got through about 7 sets of 20 sec./ 40 sec. on the elliptical. After that I hopped on the treadmill for a cool down. Anyway, both days while on the treadmill I started feeling cramps (I'm mid cycle by the way). Shortly after that I left the gym and on my way home the cramps started feeling really intense. Last night I felt it on both sides, tonight just the left side. Could the pain be from my ovaries? Both nights the cramps went away within a half hour. This happened to me one other time... a few months ago when I took a spin class. I had to bail out early... that time was actually worse... I think because I tortured myself and kept going for about 35 minutes. Has anyone experienced this or heard of this? Some background info, I'm 43, have had one child 21 years ago. I get my period regularly and I do get intense cramps on and off for the first day or so.

You shouldn't be doing HIIT on elliptical.
Other than that, I do not know the answer to your question.
I have no idea about the cramps. Just wanted to say

How come no HIIT on elliptical?
The elliptical machine is not a favorite around here because it doesn't provide as intense of a workout as some other machines like the stairmill/stepper, treadmill, and upright bike.
So you **can** do HIIT on the elliptical, but it's not nearly intense enough to be optimally effective.
I usually do mine on the upright bike or stairmill/stepper since I'm not a fan of running

Ahh, ok, well it is intense enough for me at the moment.... probably for a while longer too. Thanks for replying!

It's probably middleschmirtz (pain during ovulation). Could be exaggerated due to the HIIT.

How recently are you eating before you do HIIT? HIIT makes me yak if I've eaten within about an hour of doing it; actually, sometimes I just yak anyway. :funny: I definitely get cramps if I try doing pretty much any cardio too soon after eating.

I can never get enough speed on the elliptical...way more effective on treddy or upright bike. MO

I get this when I ovulate as well and it seems to be aggravated when I run.

I've experienced that too, only twice in the last week or two... once after a particularly long SS run and another time after HIIT on the treadmill.
Also, like you, I remember feeling something similar a few years ago during spinning. It was also over the same week or two and I've never experienced it again until recently with running. One time, it was mild discomfort and I kept going through the class and another time, about a week or so later, I had to leave the class because I felt so overwhelmed and nauseous in my uterus. I went to the change rooms and sat down and felt dizzy and I thought, if this happens again, I'll see the doc... but it didn't happen again.
I'm going to the doctor for an unrelated issue this week, I'll ask about it. I just thought it was because I pushed myself really hard, maybe too hard?

Hmmm, I felt dizzy too. And I hadn't eaten for a couple of hours before. I'm going to try it again this weekend. Let me know what your doctor says. Thanks everyone, for all of your replies!

If it's the day before my period, I get intense cramping about ten minutes into any kind of aerobic exercise, doesn't have to be HIIT.

Me too. I can get plenty of intensity of the elliptical by increasing resistance AND speed. I prefer the Precors withOUT hand holds. I'm too clutzy for the treadmill. My favorite is a spin bike, though.
