It depends on how lean (or not) you are.
It's not as bad as it sounds for the results you get IMO.

1 gr pro/lb bw, some veggies, 6 gr fish oils. That's it.
Atkins blows. That's the difference. :funny:
You don't add any fats outside of the fish oils on PSMF.

It's up to you what you do after. You don't have to go back to where you started. I think it's a great tool for comp prep if you fall behind. ;)

PSMF go to www.bodyrecomposition.com and buy Lyle McDonald's book - it explains all you need to know.
I'm on Day 2. Check out my journal, I'm tracking food, and the plan etc.
oh and I believe Brandy lost 10lbs in 2.5wks doing it and she has kept it off

The w/o's are talked about in the book. Energy starts off rather low, but my experience has been that it only last a couple of days.

According to the boards, that doesn't really happen when done intelligently.

I completely agree. It also depends on what you consider "normal" eating....

I'd like to know more....because I find it hard to believe that you can go from extremely low calories (and i have heard it is VERY low), to "normal eating" and when i say normal i mean even regular maintenance, and not gain the weight back. But I'm not willing to even prove myself wrong! LOL It's sounds brutal!

Well, if you're at maintenance, then you are neither gaining or losing. However:
- your maintenance level will drop somewhat from the low calories
- you will gain water weight back when going back to eating "normal"

Not 'a' guy who started it, it has been used first by anti-agists like the Life Extension Foundation where they have been doing CR (calorie restriction) for a long time as a means to live longer. Seems that intermittent fasting also extends the life span (in animals at least) even without any calorie restriction.
So there's been a bunch of people experimenting with it MUCH earlier than this caught on over at BR.com where it is now the 'talk of the town' as a means of a fairly painless diet. Painless, since like with PSMF appetite goes off quickly. Unlike PSMF you get to eat lots every other day and because you fast for prolonged period can still have the idea you're eating enoug, despite having only like 1000 kcal on a day or less. (or more, whichever approach you prefer).
On the PSMF: I've heard from plenty people that it f*d up their perspective of what 'healthy food' was about, since you're narrowing down choices so much and have very few condiments to 'play' with.
And frankly, I'm not sure what the rebound will be for people who even have a slight thyroid problem.
strongchick
06-20-2007, 08:12 PM
In CR, life extension is due to an increase in sert-1 protein. What CR people don't realize is the animal caloric restriction studies are done starting in very young animals...whether or not the same thing occurs in middle aged people is unknow. But it would make sense that IF could cause a similar protein change since the hormonal changes of semi-fasting would still be there...

you can believe whatever you want, but ANY diet that involves returning to the previous maintanenace level rather than the new maintenance level will result in the bodyweight returning to where it came. How quickly you got to the new weight makes little difference to that.

The way you worded it makes it seem that you believe extremely low calories will make the 'rebound' greater when going back to higher levels.

If you want to put it that way, then probably the muslims arrived really LATE to the party. Fasting for religious reasons (and mental clarity) has been a part of human culture for eons!
Fasting for health reasons must have been around almost as long.
But speaking from a recent perspective, fasting in terms of getting improved fat loss and better body recomposition, has only been a very recent phenomenon, with the people that were looking into effects of calorie restriction versus intermittent fasting for improved health benefits like anti-aging, leading the way.

the researchers first looked at the effect of ramadam on multiple biological variables. Which got the inane anti aging zealots looking into it.
