Breyers - 6-7g less carbs than Skinny Cow which means you get to eat more.

It's all about the volume (right Ileen?)

are they called Breyers "low fat" ice cream sandwiches? or are they called "sugar-free" or what? thanks.

Erik
06-28-2007, 04:01 PM
I think low fat. They're definitely not sugar free.

Something like 1-1.5g fat per serving and I think 21g carbs.

Inatic
06-28-2007, 04:06 PM
I think you need to look for the 100 cal ones, at least that is what im seeing on the website.

Are these the same ones you are talking about Erik?

http://www.breyersicecream.ca/canada/products/index.cfm?c=15&b=1&lang=en

Slim bear 100 cal sandwiches also have the same carb/fat ratio too.

So rice cakes are good for PWO I take it? Ideally how much should one have?

They're but one of many good possibilities, yes.

As for how many, there is no one-size-fits-all. It depends on the rest of your diet, how many carbs you're allotted for the day, exercise volume, etc.

It's probably going to average between 25-50g I'd imagine though.

My treat for the late PWO was a chocolate bar. While I was fine 2 days ago when I had a 'bender' on 2 bars, I was suffering this morning from the aftermath. Itching all over because of the soy lecithin. Back to the really expensive bars that don't have soy lecithin .... once again: don't fall for sales if it is 'crappy' food.

I think Thunder has said to just keep the fats incidental-- so if your bagel has 2g of fat, not a big deal. You just want to avoid smeaing something like PB on it.

Correct.

Waxy maize is derived from corn starch. It has a lower osmolality than something like maltodextrin, and even more so than dextrose. It also has a higher molecular weight as well.

That basically means it can theoretically get through the stomach faster.

So would you say 5-5g fat is the upper limit?

I have something with 180cals 37g carbs not sure on protien and 6g fat.

I haven't had it yet but sure is nice....maybe I will look into the pop-tarts right now using a raisin bread thats yummy but I love the cereal too.

Will be back to ice cream sandwiches in spring.

I don't personally feel that fruit is an ideal PWO carb. Fructose reglycogenates the liver, not the muscles. It's also a low insulin producing sugar.

What is the optimum carb to protein ratio? I read 4:1 before, but that puts the calories pretty high.

Erik

What is the optimum carb to protein ratio? I read 4:1 before, but that puts the calories pretty high.

It's honestly entirely dependent on both goals and training volume. If someone were training for fat loss (eating in a deficit) they probably wouldn't be consuming as much carbohydrate as someone who is training for muscle gain (eating in a surplus).

Similarly, the more volume you do in your training session the more carbs you can and should eat. This one ties back into the above point though since when you're dieting your training volumes are generally reduced.

Most people talk about PWO carbs for the primary purposes of reglycogenation and while sure, we want some of this, the point often missed is that with normal volume training sessions, muscle glycogen doesn't get too depleted. Standard weight training just isn't overly glycogen depleting.

So we basically have our number one goal being to turn off the protein breakdown triggered by the workout and turn on protein synthesis.

You don't need a lot to get that done either.

The 4:1 ratio you posted is admittedly high - that's 100g of carbs for every 25g of protein. Perhaps for an endurance athlete, but that's about it.

More recent work (again in endurance athletes, since they get studied often) suggested a 2:1 ratio (0.8g/kg and 0.4g.kg).

Even that however, can be too much carbs for someone - goal dependent.

Generally speaking I usually say between 25-50g of carbs PWO is sufficient when dieting.

Just isolating that for myself.

And a psychological reason...because we can at that timeperiod, right? Our bodies are good at using the carbs at this time (PWO). Not so good outside of that window.

Correct.

Insulin sensitivity is heightened and your body's response to nutrients is enhanced. It's the 'safest' time to eat.

you can buy frozen bread dough, let it rise (they give directions) Then shape it into pretzels.
Boil 2 qt of water with .5 c of baking SODA.
drop the pretzels in the lightly boiling water /cook for about 15 sec.
Put on to a tray with salt or lightly spay.
bake for about 10-15 min.

I made some dough in my breadmachine and then followed the above steps. The recipe made 8. My 3 boys ate them in 5 min! :love55:

I have a question for those having yummy PWO meals. Do you find it hard to have just a bit of the chocolate or whatever, only at a certain time? For me, I've had none, because I find it hard to balance the moderation portion of the 'junk food'. I'm not sure I would be ready for having just a taste. Did anyone feel this way at first, and as they adjusted slowly added it back in no problem?

Ok never mind I am a dork I found it after all...here it is if you want to try it. I haven't yet so if it is yucky caca I cannot be held responsible

1 scoop protein powder
2 tbsp. nonfat vanilla or plain yogurt (the no-sugar added or Splenda-sweetened kind)
A few shakes of cinnamon
1 tbsp. cottage cheese
1 tbsp. water

Mix it up so it's a brownie batter consistency and microwave for 40-60 seconds, or until it's puffed up but still soft-ish in the middle. It rocks

The low fat ice cream sandwiches and any other dessert type treats are more doable on refeeds IMO. I'm with you Holly--pwo, it's just enough to make you want more and doesn't keep you as full.

However when you are refeeding it's nice to have a little treat or two thrown in the day as you generally have plenty of caloric room for it and usually your not hungry and looking for more on a refeed day.

a number of things... glycogen replenishment just to name one. if you are focusing on building muscle, carbs should be a very large part of your diet...
this can vary tho, as some are carb sensitive, so it can be subjective...

what are your goals?

Normal volume resistance training isn't very glycogen depleting though.

The primary benefits would be kick starting recovery and the anabolic processes by shutting down protein breakdown and stimulating protein synthesis.

Right.. and actually re strength I've had very good results with no carbs post-WO but eating many more the night before a lifting day. OTOH, I'd not recover as fast after lifting.

Most carbs I have, are ingested during a WO. Tonight I'll be coupling a class in self defence with lifting. Will do the lifting before the class and then have most of the protein/carb shake I've prepared and then save some for after the class.
(fermented) goat Milk PP with IsoSpark (grape-lemon) is blended together. Never had it before..

A big thank you for the Reese Puff's recommendation! So yummy.

Of course, I have to hide the box from the kids because I would have a hard time explaining why I don't allow them to eat such nasty cereal for breakfast! :whistling:

Tonight I toasted a WW Low Fat waffle, then measured out 1/2 FF SF ice cream...ohhhhh so good! It was almost like a waffle cone. 160 cal/36 carbs.

I actually sent some stuff to Atlanta recently and it didn't make it either so far. That really ticks me off. I'm going to start sending stuff registered mail

For some reason, I thought these had too much fat...I know there was a reason I didn't buy them (well, the salsa and sour cream or nacho cheese flavor.) Maybe those ones are higher?

I get a lot more carbs and calories than you do PWO. :p Not like I ate the whole thing.

So they wouldn't work for me then?

As an aside, I used to totally rationalize to myself that I could eat the whole bag since it was about 1/3 of the total cals of a whole chip bag :funny:

Today's PWO meal:

1 1/2 scoops vanilla protein powder w/ water
Banana

It would be smart to replace that banana w/ another carb source. :)

Had some licorice for the PWO carbs this week. Yummy.

Bought it for the kids to decorate the Easter bunny cake with...better not eat it all!

Why is that?

Is it ok to have something like oats (w/ fiber) PWO?

I believe its not good to have fructose after your workout. Not sure why though
Oats are fine.

Not optimal. Preferably something that digests faster.

Hmmm...I have heard of a lot of people (even on here) eating oats PWO. I know the fibre slows down digestion, but still figured it was ok
Not that it matters since I don't eat oats PWO anyways :)

What is your take on the theory that as long as there are nutrients in your body (from a previous, well balanced, recent meal), that PWO isn't vital?

Along the lines of the fact that one's pre-workout meal is arguably more important?
