View Full Version : Muscle density vs. fat density-

So I was just having a conversation with this guy lately and I'm wondering if anyone knows how the density of fat compares with that to muscles. Like if you had a pound of muscle vs. a pound of fat, how much area would they both take up? He's quite a heavy guy (6'2" and 275 pounds), and granted some of it is obviously bodyfat, but he definitely doesn't look this weight. Most people would 210 or so. Would it just be that he carries more muscle and that is how he is so much heavier?

Well, muscle is obviously denser than fat, but I'm not sure what kind of answer you're looking for ...

Sorry, not much help here.

The density of fat is about 0.9g/cm3, whereas the density of lean tissue is
1.1g/cm3.

That helps out a bit. I guess I was just looking for like if you put 20 pounds of muscle on a body or 20 pounds of fat, how much bigger would the person with the fat look.

20 lbs of muscle is a LOT.

Think about what 20 lbs of steak looks like.

I also have a girlfriend who is the same height as me, 5'7 1/2"but has higher body fat and less muscle. We were out to dinner one night and she was amazed to find out we were the same weight, 135. I was a size 4 and she was a size 8.

yah, well 275 pounds is a lot too. Honestly though, the kid looks like he weighs 200 pounds, so either he just carries it incredibly good or else he must have quite a bit of muscle under all the fat....

It's simply wonderful that you have to rely on Internet screw-ups to "best" me.

Carrion birds hunt for animals too. Their excuse is unavoidable mistakes.
