This is soo bad- the main guy at our gym posted this big ole thing on the door about" loosing"- yeah you read it right thats how he spelled "losing" weight!
He had all kinds of crazy stuff on there- but the one that pushed me so far over the edge that I actually took it down, wrote "where the hell did you get this crap" and put it right back up was this:
"To maintain your current weight- take your bodyweight x10, and whatever that comes to then subtract 500 from that!:eh:

needless to say the next week all of these papers that were taped everywhere were taken down.... friggin pathetic.

Nothing compares to the "advice" i was given for my first show which lead me to beg Erik to help me out at the last minute...

1 week out: Eat Salmon at least 6 times a day. Adding Safflower oil and start cutting water at a week out :thumb: Good stuff huh?

Worst advice I got was from my last trainer who is also an IFBB pro figure competitor.

I was allowed 850-900 calories per day at 9 weeks out from a show. I could eat white fish, 1/4 - 1/2 cup of oatmeal depending on the day and 2 cups of veggies. I was also "allowed" egg whites. Read: basically no fat. At this point my hair was falling out and i was going #2 once every 6-7 days!!!

My supplements were all at least 3X the recommended dosage and I was expected to weight train every day plus do 2 hours and 10 minutes of cardio a day. She kept increasing it and when I told her that was the max i could fit in my day plus still work 2 jobs, she got frustrated with me.

The final 2 weeks before the show I was nowhere near shape to get on stage. She wanted me to do back to back water depletes of a week each and do between 2 and 4 hours of cardio a day. She suggested I take time off work to do cardio!!! When things weren't working, she pushed prescription diuretics. That's when i quit, walked away and found Erik.

So BW x 10- 500 to maintain eh? I get about 550 calories....guess I need to stop eating to lose weight

No laughing Erik, she was DAMN serious! She was actually mad at me and made a scene in the studio in front of other trainers about if I wanted to be a figure competitor I needed to act like one, etc. OMG.

And yet, people will continue to go to her. I'm sad for all the other girls doing 2+ hours of cardio a day to get on stage... :muahaha:

Oh and I should add, she kept telling me she wanted me to be healthy and that she was taking the previous cancer into consideration. Um, yup, no blue berries, no good fats to speak of, not much leafy greens in my diet... and this was a no-cancer healthy diet? She didn't do much research, that's for sure.

Sorry, I'm seriously worked up again, LOL. :catfight:

Zero fats for the entire duratioon of contest prep

Sodium loading for 5 days at about 9 days out(at a range of something stupid like 15000mg/day) then cutting all sodium at 4 days out (including boiling chicken in distilled water to remove sodium) and starting to cut water at 3 days out.

I'm sure I'll think of more....

My Dad the insulin dependant diabetic is convinced 60% (yes, he uses percentages) of his calories must be carbs.

it's frustrating having conversations about food with him.

smuggie
08-20-2007, 04:54 AM
And where did he come up with this?

Fitwolf
08-20-2007, 04:58 AM
I think he's basing it on nutritional books that are written for endurance athletes - marathoners, cyclists, etc. One of his favorite nutrition writers is Nancy Clark... but he doesn't exercise nearly as much as the people she is writing for. He's more in the 30minutes moderate cardio 3x week camp.

The exercise is good... it makes his body need less insulin. I just don't buy all the carbs...

Most national diabetes bodies around the world recommend somewhere around 50-60% of calories from carbohydrates.

Nothing wrong with it

Shelle... OMG. :eh:

Some random stuff I've heard over the years...

*Drinking water with lemon somehow cures cancer. I think this came out of that "Natural Cures They Don't Want You to Know About" book that was very popular last year. I forget the exact name of the book, but it includes gems like this as well as dire instructions against wearing deodorant.

*The Cabbage Soup diet. The Tuna Diet. The Grapefruit Diet. (enough said)

*Avocados are bad for you. I still hear this all the time. I don't really know what qualifies this statement; I think people understand that avocados have fat in them, which therefore makes them terrible for you.

*Eating eggs will give you heart disease. I think this is an old idea that is slowly being replaced, but I still run into a lot of people who think I'm going to drop dead from heart failure if I eat a whole egg.

Aaron, can you explain this to me? Here's my thinking:

the more carbs he eats, the more insulin he has to inject. With the vairability in how his body responds to insulin based on mood, exercise... etc, it seems to me that the less carbs (and therefore insulin) he eats/ injects the better. Obviously, he would have to eat some carbs... but why is such a high percentage reccomended?

Aaron_F
08-20-2007, 10:58 PM
dibaetics have to learn how they respond to multiple things, including food intake. The dietary recommendations may be for reasonably higher percentage of energy from carbohydrates, but typically these are high fibre, low energy foods, like recommended for anyone, with in the context of a calorically controlled program, the amount is only going gto be 200-300g total

Consistency of food intake is important. So eating 400g one day then 800 the next will screw things up

Fitwolf
08-21-2007, 03:01 AM
so my less carbs/less insulin theory is worthless?

I do think he eats good carbs - lots of brown rice and oatmeal.

ALthough I think the oatmeal recently was making acid reflux worse?

Aaron_F
08-21-2007, 06:41 AM
It will work to an extent

but diabetics need to inject insulin regardless, and if you inject insulin, you need to put in carbs...

I think I've experienced some bad nutritional advice!! How about my entire contest prep!! :eh: 6 fish oil capsules a day is enough fat, right? And a 1/2 c. white rice for carbs - when you're doing 2 hours of cardio and 45 minutes of weight training? That's outright generous! And my high carb days were 2/3 c. rice! Over-the-top!

Breaking diet news from my coworker!!

(something to the extent of....)

Some "advice" I just received recently...

"I can't believe you eat right before you go to bed! If you eat anything after 7PM at night, it will instantly turn to fat as you sleep. It's just not healthy for you to eat that late at night. That's what Oprah does anyway, and she lost tons of weight!" The person who said this to me was eating an enourmous fried seafood platter at the time.

That's why I'm doing The Hot Diet now!!111 How could I have ever thought that ice was GOOD?? :dope:

One reviewer of the Hot Diet book says:

I enjoyed reading the book. An excellent overall review of various aspects of issues that impact weight control. As for no ice, this is the first book addressing the temperature of our drinks and its impact on weight control. There are magazine articles that agree with the author's claim. well worth further exploration. Reduction of ice consumption fits with our drive for being environmentally friendly and saving energy too.

Eating dairy products during contest prep will make your skin 'thick'.

You should cut fruit out of your diet as your show approaches as it has too much sugar in it.

I remember hearing about this. She didn't drown, she died from hyperhydration (it's also called hyponatremia, water intoxication or water poisoning). This is actually getting to be a problem with some marathoners and triathletes. The "back of packers" that are told to drink so much water per 15 minutes of exercise but don't replenish with electrolite drinks. There have been a few deaths and some hospitilizations, mostly women who are walking. I know Runners World ran an article about this a few years ago.
