I've been on birth control for a long time now. My boyfriend has moved across the country and I won't be seeing him for quite a while so I don't really need to be on birth control. Do you guys think that it would be a good idea to take a break from it until he gets home?

you might have trouble getting your cycles back. and that can potentially leech calcium from your bones, or at least so I understand. just my take on it.

have you talked to your doc about it?

I don't see why you would, are you having crazy issues with it?

From what I know, there's no reason to stop it. Even if I were to never have sex ever again starting now, I would not get off BC. I like having everything regulated, plus I have a day and a half period. I won't complain about that.

How long is quite a while? Keep in mind that once you go off, you potentially could start ovulating again, and it is theorized to take a month once you start back up on bc to be protected from pregnancy. It's a personal decision that I don't think has any health reasons behind why you should/shouldn't take a break from it.

Birth control has never been my sole means of contraception but I do realize that if I was to start back on it it could take a full month to actually start working. I would like to go off of it for a while to see if it affects my sex drive. Not that it would matter at the moment but it would be nice to see if that is one of the culprits, I've heard is quite common with bc. One of the positives of bc is of course staying regular. I'll make an apointment with the doc but I probably won't get in for a few months and I was thinking about stopping it at the end of this cycle :curse:

I think just being away from your bf will make your sex drive go up considerably!
But bc definately affects sex drive. I went off it years ago for this reason.

I just came off BCP's about a month ago and it was the best thing I ever did!! I have a libido again, my mood is better, and, for some insane reason, some of my tummy issues have resolved themselves. I had read somewhere that the progesterone can effect digestive motility thereby causing some tummy issues. I went off the pill and BAM! no tummy troubles. I am a happy, happy lady!!

To those of you that went of bc because of a low libido, which pill were you taking? I'm currently taking Ortho-Tri-Cylcen and I've found that within the last year, my sex drive has completely disappeared. I've switched to a couple of diff brands, but they caused breakthrough bleeding. The only reason I continue to use the pill is because of convenience. Thoughts?

Well, I'm on Alesse (generic Aviane), and have had no problems w/sex drive. It hasn't actually regulated my periods or anything, though.

My advice is that if you're having serious issues w/your libido, then by all means use this time period to experiment...maybe try a different pill, go off it completely, whatever...but if you're just curious to see what happens, I would NOT put my body through that. That's just my $0.02.
