What percent of your max HR should you reach during the intense intervals of an HIIT session?

Heart rate, percent MHR, etc really don't come into play as factors in interval training. I don't see it as a relative parameter. Rather, use a Rating of Perceived Exertion scale - ie. 1-10 with 1 being easy and 10 being max effort.

Ok, so going by PRE, what intensity level do you recommend for the higher end of the threshold? (9-10?)

Shorter sprints - higher on the RPE scale.
Longer sprints - lower on the RPE scale.

So, a 30-second sprint would probably have you working at a higher intensity than say a 60-second sprint. Only because you simply can't work at the same intensity and run a longer distance.

Would that be relative? The last part - say - being able to put the max output on a 30 or 60 second sprint?

Say - Micheal Johnson - his 200m time his 100m splits were each faster than the 100m world record time. That would be insane for you or I - to be able to run each second of a 100m in the 200m faster than we could run a 100m all out. Granted, I'm referring to one of the most premier sprinters in Olympic history lol.

For all intents and purposes, however, I agree - I don't think anyone in here could do the same output for 30 at 60 seconds of all out sprinting.

A sprint is relative to the distance you need to run. Obviously a 400m "sprint" will not be just 100m "sprint" speed x 4.

Besides, its HIIT, not HIST.
