View Full Version : Egg whites
I just switched over to the carton egg whites. How much is that if you're used to cracking 5 egg whites? I thought it ws half a cup but I only got 3 little pancakes out of that when I usually get 5 biggish ones

A 250 ml carton is about a cup.

I just look at the calories for the egg whites compared to a cracked egg. I figured that one egg white is 15-20 calories. So, depending on the brand, I usually get about 1 cup egg whites = 6 egg whites. I hope that is correct! it comes out to around 100 calories. So, by my random logic, 5 egg whites =3/4 cup + 1 tbsp. I would like to hear if that is correct!
1 cup is generally equsl to 8 egg whites.

Do you use the NATUREGG Simply Egg Whites brand? If so, on the package, it say ''1 egg white equals 2 tablespoons''.

Ana, I think the problem might be the processing they do to the carton egg whites - I believe they are pasteurized or something
All I know is that I tried to use them to make meringue-type cookies last christmas and they didn't rise at all - they were flat as little pancakes  (even though I whipped the heck out of them.)
I don't know if you'd notice the difference if you were just scrambling them, but to make a pancake you would, especially if your pancakes fluff up or rise normally.
I've bought a carton once before.. never again! Blegh!
Use fresh eggs all the time and practically never throw away yolks. If I do, I'm using a high quality stainless steel egg strainer. Well worth the expense.
I don't know what I ws using Cathou but I've decided to stick to my egg whites. Well worth the time and effort to crack those babies. That crap in a carton is blech :yucky:

I have one of those. I can't eat all those yolks I'd have a heart attack

Some egg whites sold in cartons contain other ingredients - esp those larger quart size containers. Papetti Foods puts out QuickWhites - no guar gum, no other ingredients, just 100% egg whites. I think these taste as good as fresh. Tarader Joes and some supermarkets carry them.

This is what I got but I still found them different.

Sorry I couldn't help - I guess you just have to keep cracking some eggs.
