Would being pregnant & gaining weight for 9 mths consitute a "bulk"? Reason I am asking is since I started working again with Erik about 2 mths ago (baby is now 4.5mths), I think I look leaner this time around vs the first time I started with him. Could it be possible that I added some muscle while pregnant? Or is that just silly?

There shall be a lot of re-compositioning during pregnancy, specially depending on how clean you ate during those 9 months.
I don't know the answer :p but I hope someone posts about it

the food I consumed was not all that clean, but the majority of it consisted of pasta, protein shakes and pizza

Well, I'm 7 months preggo, and I'll give my thoughts...
Depends how you were training. I know for me, I was doing a great job training pre-preggo but there is no way I've gained muscle now. I seriously had to decrease my intensity, volume, and frequency because my body just couldn't handle what I had been doing. I've maintained, hopefully, but definitely not gained.
But, if you were going from little training to some training, I suppose its possible.

I am also 5.5 months preggo, and although I am still training (both weights and cardio now), I do not think I have added any muscle either. Yes, you are eating at a surplus, but unless you were a complete newbie before getting pregnant and started working out while being pregnant, it will be very hard to make any kind of muscle gain.
Gaining muscle would assume not only a calorie surplus, but also increasing weights over time in order to give your body a reason to adapt and grow. While you can maintain close to the weights you lifted prior to being pregnant, in most cases it will be very hard to increase those weights (nor is it necessarily recommended as you do not want to strain when lifting).
I am also not sure the hormonal environment while being pregnant (increased estrogen) is very conducive to msucle gain.
I think the best you can hope for is maintaining what you have while being preggo.

Well ladies, you better do a set of 25 pull ups at once, while you are carrying the extra weight and I bet some gains will be made. Check this girl out: http://media.crossfit.com/cf-video/sakamoto-pull-ups.wmv :thumb:

Not exactly what I would call strict pull-ups  Still, this is impressive for someone pregnant!
I am actually still able to do 7-8 pull-ups right now, even with the added weight gain (about 10lbs)... This is about what I could do pre-preggo, except that I added a weight belt. No weight belt needed now!

I saw "Crossfit" and "pull-ups" and I knew she was doing kipping pull-ups before I even saw the vid. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v614/montagnu/smiles%20and%20laughter%20smilies/penguinlol.gif

The kind of pull-ups she was doing in the vid are called kipping pull-ups.
Did you notice how she was using a lot of momentum and swinging like a sumbitch, curving her body into an S shape and not using full ROM? Doing all those things makes it easier to pull yourself up, hence Audrey's comment that they weren't exactly strict pull-ups.

I see lots of guys doing this at the gym. Is there any benefit to doing them like that or is it just that they can't do strict pull-ups?

I think I've read something to the effect that they may help you gain strength for regular pull-ups. I think.

They have an instructional video with their explanation on the form: http://media.crossfit.com/cf-video/CrossFit_Kipping1-Concept.wmv
OH MY GOSH!
Regular or not- good for her!!! I can barely do 2-3 pull-ups (at 118 lbs... :uhuh: )
Thanks for sharing this video- I will add this exercise to my routine to help me build my strength for regular pull-ups. I've been doing 4 sets of 8 negatives for a couple of weeks, and they really help.
