hmmm rice and beans, tofu, tempeh, soy protein, edamame, soymilk, lentils, soy yogurt, all legumes, spirulina and chollera, grains like amaranth and quinoa (highest in protein), buckwheat, oatmeal, barley, brown rice. pumpkin seeds, all kinds of high in amino acid leafy greens like alfalfa sprouts, spinach, brussel sprouts. Nutritional yeast flakes, various nuts. :D

Yeah, if you're going vegan and raw, AND you want low carb that doesn't leave much. Most pure rawists that I have spoken with don't feel you need that high of protein anyway. There is a considerable amount of protein in some greens (given their total caloric content) etc.

That said I've seen the physiques belonging to some vegans and rawists that look damn buff.

:givememeat:

Um, why is she doing this exactly?

That was my question. I"d guess and say cause she is misinformed ;)

The vegan and weight training makes perfect sense to me. And you can do low carb on a vegan diet, although it's pretty difficult to do really low carb. I'm no expert on the raw thing, but when you put all four of those things together I'd say yes, she's a little misinformed. If nothing else, she's spinning her wheels and going nowhere.

As far as getting protein on raw and low carb, she pretty much shit out of luck unless she wants to rely on protein powders. It also depends how low carb she is going as most of of protein sources have some carbs... but if she's doing raw then she's basically looking at very little protein.

It makes no sense honestly.

I can't dispute there are lots of buff vegans out there, but are they healthy?

Brendan Brazier, a Canadian, vegan triathlete and owner of "Vega" (a terrific (IMO) brand of protein shake/bars), has some good info in his "Thrive" book. I've used several of his recipes. He does use grains, but not extensively, preferring other plant foods.

How would you define "healthy?" Are bodybuilders healthy? Are figure competitors in the full throes of prep healthy? I know a few vegetarian/vegan athletes and most are as healthy as any other totally obsessive-compulsive athletes . . . (which is to say healthier than most people out there, with um, some "issues"!)

As for vegan, raw, low-carb and high-protein, I'd think you're pretty much down to . . . a lot of raw hemp protein. Yikes.
